Square Enix Debuts Net Anime About Dragon Quest X Player Stories

posted on by Jennifer Sherman
1st episode focuses on family celebrating birthday of daughter who passed away

Square Enix began streaming the first episode of its Dragon Quest X: Bōkensha-tachi no Kiseki (Dragon Quest X: The Miracles of the Adventurers) anime on Tuesday. The anime celebrates the Dragon Quest X online game's fifth anniversary by animating player-submitted "miraculous stories" related to the game.

The first episode is titled "Namae no Omoi" (The Feeling of a Name), and centers on a family of three: a mother, father, and daughter. The story begins last year, when the father and mother were playing Dragon Quest X, and players were celebrating the overall franchise's' 30th anniversary while their daughter looks on.

The mother's game character is named "Yukina." The daughter remarks that it looks as if the players are celebrating her older sister Yukina's birthday. A flashback reveals that "Yukina" was the name of the couple's first daughter, who passed away, and that the mother's character is named after her.

A year later, the father suggests something to his fellow players. When the celebration for Dragon Quest X's fifth anniversary occurs, the couple's online friends all wish Yukina a happy 15th birthday — the age she would have been had she been alive.

Square Enix announced during the "Dragon Quest Natsu Matsuri" event on Sunday that its Dragon Quest X online game will get a new expansion titled Dragon Quest X: 5000-nen no Tabiji, Haruka Naru Furusato e (The 5000 Year Journey, to the Faraway Home Town), which is slated for release on November 16. Square Enix also announced that Dragon Quest X director Chikara Saitō is stepping down as director after the release of the expansion, and that chief planner Takashi Anzai is stepping in as the game's new director.
