Only Domestic Films in Japan's Yearly Top 10 So Far Are 2 Anime Films

The Cinema Today website reported Japan's top 10 theatrical releases in terms of box office takings for the first half of 2017 on Monday. The ranking covers films that opened between late 2016 and June 2017. The list's only two Japanese films, both of them anime, are Detective Conan: The Crimson Love Letter and Eiga Doraemon: Nobita no Nankyoku Kachi Kochi Daibōken.

The top ten titles and their estimated box office takings are as follows:

1. Beauty and the Beast: 12.5 billion yen (about US$114 million)
2. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: 7.3 billion yen (US$66.6 million)
3. Detective Conan: The Crimson Love Letter: 6.87 billion yen (US$62.7 million)
4. Moana: 5.15 billion yen (US$47.0 million)
5. Sing: 5.1-5.2 billion yen (US$46.5-US$47.4 million)
6. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story: 4.63 billion yen (US$42.2 million)
7. Eiga Doraemon: Nobita no Nankyoku Kachi Kochi Daibōken 4.43 billion yen (US$40.4 million)
8. La La Land: 4.4 billion yen (US$40.1 million)
9. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter: 4.27 billion yen (US$38.9 million)
10. The Fate of the Furious: 4.1-4.2 billion yen (US$37.4-38.2 million)

Cinema Today also listed the top 10 domestic films for the first half of 2017. In addition to the Detective Conan and Doraemon films that made the overall top 10 list, the recent Yo-kai Watch and Sword Art Online films made the domestic top 10. The manga-based live-action film Teiichi no Kuni also ranked.

2. Eiga Doraemon: Nobita no Nankyoku Kachi Kochi Daibōken 4.43 billion yen (US$40.4 million)
3. Eiga Yo-kai Watch: Sora Tobu Kujira to Double Sekai no Daibōken da Nyan!: 3.26 billion yen (US$29.7 million)
4. Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale: 2.5-2.6 billion yen (US$22.8-23.7 million)
5. Kaizoku to Yobareta Otoko: 2.37 billion yen (US$21.6 million)
6. 22-nenme no Kokuhaku -Watashi ga Satsujinhan desu-: 2.34 billion yen (US$21.4 million, as of July 23)
7. Hirugao: 2.23 billion yen (US$20.4 million, as of July 23)
8. Aibō -Gekijōban IV- Shuto Climax: Kakari wa 50-Mannin! Tokumei Kakari Saigo no Ketsudan: 1.92 billion yen (US$17.5 million)
9. Teiichi no Kuni: 1.92 billion yen (US$17.5 million)
10. Boku wa Asu, Kinō no Kimi to Date Suru: 1.85 billion yen (US$16.9 million)

The live-action Gintama film, which opened on July 14, has already surpassed some of the films on the domestic list for the first half of 2017. As of this past weekend, the film is the first Japanese live-action film this year to surpass 3 billion yen.
