Crows Zero Prequel Film Inspires Stage Play

Takashi Miike directed 2007 film based on Hiroshi Takahashi's manga

Crows Zero, the 2007 live-action film prequel to Hiroshi Takahashi's Crows manga, is inspiring a stage play adaptation from November 30 to September 3 at Tokyo's CBGK theater.

Yoshitatsu Yamada is directing the play and writing the script. The cast will star the Theater Troupe Bancho Boys (pictured above) and the Theater Troupe Bancho Boys Cadets, but the staff will also hold auditions for young men ages 12-26. Applications will be accepted until September 4.

Takahashi's Crows manga ran for 26 volumes, and Digital Manga Publishing partially published its sequel manga Worst in English. Crows also inspired a two-episode anime OVA adaptation, the 1994 Koukou Butouden Crows.

The manga inspired three live-action films, with Takashi Miike directing the first two films, Crows Zero and Crows Zero II. Crows Explode, the third film, opened in Japan in April 2014. Tokyo Shock released the first film on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in North America, and video label MVM released both Crows Zero and Crows Zero II in the United Kingdom.

The live-action films, in turn, inspired manga adaptations. The Crows Explode manga will launch in October.
