Koji Yamamura Short Nominated at Raindance Film Festival

"Notes on Monstropedia" to screen in London

Director Koji Yamamura's short film "Notes on Monstropedia" ("Kaibutsu Gakushō") will screen at the UK's Raindance Film Festival in competition for the Best Animation Short Award.

The six-minute short shows monsters themed after Medieval European monsters with strange names. Yamamura got the idea for the short in 2013 when sketching monsters in his notebook, and got the idea for the strange names from terms and words that became strange when translated. The short uses George Frideric Handel's "Harpsichord Suite In F, HWV 427" and "Harpsichord Suite In D Minor, HWV 428" for music, arranged and performed by Hitomi Shimizu.

Yamamura received an Academy Award nod in 2003 for his short "Mt. Head," although he did not win. He remains the only Japanese animator besides Hayao Miyazaki and Kunio Katō to be nominated for an Oscar. His "Satie's Parade" short was nominated at Raindance last year.

The Raindance Film Festival describes itself as the largest independent film festival in the United Kingdom. This year, it will take place from September 20 to October 1 in London. The Shorts Programme: Animation, which includes Yamamura's short, will screen on September 23 and 30.
