Yakuza Online Game's 13-Minute Prologue Video Streamed

1st game in "New Yakuza" series with new protagonist arrives on smartphones, PC in 2018

The official YouTube channel for Sega's Yakuza (Ryū ga Gotoku) franchise began streaming a 13-minute prologue video on Saturday for the Yakuza Online game. The prologue video explains the birth and life of the game's new protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga.

The game will launch for iOS and Android devices and on PC in 2018.

Sega also opened a website on Saturday for the game, which features an image of Ichiban. While Kazuma Kiryū's story ended with Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, Yakuza Online starts a "New Yakuza" series with Ichiban as the protagonist. Kazuhiro Nakaya is voicing the character. Sega also plans to continue the "New Yakuza" series with console games after Yakuza Online launches.

The game will be free to play, and in-game items will cost extra. The game takes place in 2018 in the Kamurochō area of Tokyo. Ichiban was born in 1977 and raised in Kamurochō. Ichiban comes back to Kamurochō after 17 years behind bars, and he will work to take back the district from the rule of a union between the police and the Omi Alliance.

The game's official website also revealed that the Yakuza game franchise has shipped than 9.5 million copies.

Sega will release Yakuza 6: The Song of Life (Ryū ga Gotoku 6: Inochi no Uta) in the West on PlayStation 4. The game is the first mainline release in the franchise that will keep the subtitle in the English title of the game. Sega will release the game in the West in early 2018. The game shipped on the PS4 in Japan in December 2016.
