Newspaper: New Live-Action Rurouni Kenshin Film In the Works

Film's actress Emi Takei in breach of contract for marriage, pregnancy

The Daily Sports newspaper revealed in a report about actress Emi Takei on Monday that a new live-action film adaptation of Nobuhiro Watsuki's Rurouni Kenshin manga is planned.

The original article concerned Takei's announcement last Friday of her marriage with Exile band member Takahiro, as well as her pregnancy, being a breach of contract. The article noted that Oscar Promotion, Takei's agency, apologized to its clients on Sunday, and it is negotiating penalties for breach of contract. It is not uncommon in Japan for female talent to have contracts that stipulate restrictions on marriage, divorce, and pregnancy.

The article also stated that Takei has agreements with up to 10 companies for commercials, including JTB and Yōfuku no Aoyama, and that her agreement with SSP might be terminated, with her commercial agreements with other companies being affected. The penalty for her breach of contract might reach up to 1 billion yen (about US$9.11 million). The report noted that her role in the Rurouni Kenshin films as heroine Kaoru Kamiya is an important one that cannot be written out.

The first live-action Rurouni Kenshin film opened in 2012 in Japan, while the two sequels opened in August and September 2014. The films collectively grossed more that US$160 million internationally. Funimation screened all three films in United States theaters in August, September, and October 2016, respectively.
