Macross Delta Film Reveals Title, February 2018 Opening With Concerts

At a Macross Delta film announcement event on Monday, Macross franchise creator Shōji Kawamori unveiled the title and opening date of the film project. Gekijō-ban Macross Delta: Gekijō no Walkūre (Macross Delta the Movie: Passionate Walkūre) will open on February 9, 2018. (The terms for "theater" and "passion" are homonyms in Japanese — "gekijō.") The film will recompile scenes from the television anime with new scenes to tell a different story, to maximize the storytelling potential of the shorter runtime but larger medium. It will have at least one new song and enhanced battle sequences.
The members of the anime's idol group Walkūre also announced their third set of live concerts. The "Walkūre wa Uragiranai" (Walkūre Won't Betray You) concerts will run on February 24 and February 25 at the Yokohama Arena. Tickets are going on sale after the event with more information on the macross.jp website.
The Tokyo Skytree complex will host a collaboration with the anime.
Other projects commemorating the 35th anniversary of Macross include a virtual reality project and a planetarium project, as well amusement center, projection mapping display, toy, shop, and network projects.
The franchise is also receiving a new television anime series in 2018 to commemorate the anniversary.
The 26-episode Macross Delta television anime series ran from April to September 2016, after a preview of the first episode in 2015.
Macross Delta has also inspired several manga series and a novel. The in-story idol unit Walküre also performs as an idol unit in real life, and the group has held several live events. The group's first album won the Animation Album of the Year award for the Recording Industry Association of Japan's (RIAJ) Japan Gold Disc Awards for 2017.
