Paramount acquires film rights

The Hollywood Reporter reported on Tuesday that Paramount has the rights to the live-action film adaptation of Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima's samurai manga Lone Wolf and Cub, and Andrew Kevin Walker (Seven, Sleepy Hollow, Wolfman) is on board to write the script.

Justin Lin is producing the project with his Perfect Storm Entertainment banner along with Marissa McMahon and Kamala Films.

Kamala Films had acquired the rights to the film in 2012, but in 2016 SP International Pictures announced that it had acquired the rights and planned to begin shooting in 2017. Lin was initially attached to the project as a director and he confirmed in 2016 that he was still involved.

Before Kamala Films, director Darren Aronofsky (Pi, The Fountain, The Wrestler, Black Swan) had tried to secure the film rights to the manga.

The manga already inspired six feature movies starring Tomisaburō Wakayama, four stage plays, and a television series. Dark Horse Comics releases the original manga in North America, while Media Blasters licensed the Japanese live-action television series. AnimEigo licensed the Japanese 1972 live-action film version and its five sequels.
