Haikyu!! Gets 5th Stage Play in Spring 2018

Director/scriptwriter, lead actor return for new "Hajimari no Kyojin" play

The official website for the stage play adaptations of Haruichi Furudate's Haikyu!! volleyball manga announced on Sunday that a fifth stage play has been green-lit. The new stage play is titled Hyper-Projection Engeki Haikyu!! "Hajimari no Kyojin" (Hyper-Projection Stage Play Haikyu!! "The Giant of Beginnings"). The play will debut in spring 2018.

"Worry Kinoshita" is returning from the previous four Haikyu!! stage play adaptations to direct and write the script. Oropa Irie is also collaborating on the script, and Shunsuke Wada is composing the music. Hidali is in charge of choreography. Kenta Suga will return from previous stage plays to reprise his role as Hinata.

The new stage play will focus on Hinata and Kageyama developing their new attack, as well as portraying the stories of other members on the Karasuno team. Like the last four stage plays, this new play is billed as a "hyper-projection play," with video projections that allow for manga-styled speech bubbles, as well as views of the stage floor, and a revolving stage.

The fourth stage play (seen right), titled Hyper-Projection Engeki Haikyu!! "Shinka no Natsu" (Hyper-Projection Stage Play Haikyu!! "Summer of Evolution"), ran Tokyo from September 8-10, and also ran in Osaka, Hyōgo, Miyagi, and Fukuoka before returning to Tokyo for its final October 20-29 run. The third stage play ran in Tokyo, Miyagi, Osaka, and Fukuoka, and back to Tokyo from March 24 to May 7. The second stage play ran in Tokyo, Iwaki, Fukuoka, and Osaka in November-December 2016. The first stage play ran in Tokyo, Osaka, and Miyagi in November-December 2015.

Production I.G's anime adaptation of Furudate's volleyball manga premiered in April 2014. The second season of the anime premiered in October 2015, and third season premiered last October. Crunchyroll streamed all three seasons as they aired in Japan, and Sentai Filmworks has licensed all three seasons. The company released the first season in Japanese with English subtitles on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in 2015.

The Haikyu!! Sainō to Sense compilation film opened in Japan on September 15, followed by the Haikyu!! Concept no Tatakai compilation film on September 29.
