Shochiku Reports Increase in Sales Over 1st Half of 2017

Company notes Kuroko's Basketball, Tokyo Ghoul films as popular titles

Film and theater company Shochiku released its quarterly financial results last month, revealing its sales numbers for the period of March 1 to August 31, the first half of fiscal year 2017. The company reported total sales of 49.384 billion yen (about US$434 million), a 3.3% increase compared to the same period last year.

Shochiku also reported an operating profit of 4.801 billion yen (about US$42.2 million), a 15.2% increase from last year, an ordinary income of 4.444 billion yen (about US$39.1 million), a 19.6% increase, and a net income of 2.633 billion yen (about US$23.1 million), a 13.4% increase.

The film-related industry accounted for 28.952 billion yen of the total sales and 2.693 billion yen of the net income, both an increase from the same period last year.

The company reported that it distributed eleven Japanese live-action films, four Western films, and seven anime films over the six-month period. These included the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Reflection, Free! -Timeless Medley- Kizuna, Free! -Timeless Medley- Yakusoku, and Gekijōban Kuroko no Basuke Last Game (Kuroko's Basketball The Movie: Last Game) anime films, as well as the live-action film adaptations of the Tokyo Ghoul, P to JK, ReLIFE, Ani ni Aisaresugite Komattemasu, and Peach Girl manga.

Shochiku noted P to JK, Gekijōban Kuroko no Basuke Last Game, Tokyo Ghoul, and the HiGH&LOW the Movie 2/End of Sky live-action film as particularly popular titles.

Shochiku's theater industry accounted for 12.326 billion yen in sales and 1.004 billion yen of the net income.
