I also didn't find anything funny about the sudden sexualization of the girls. During the original run of the series, people were talking about it being a satire of fanservice in this type of shows, but I just didn't get it. Saekano, to be funny, never needed that, so I was kind of pissed when Michiru was introduced, because I felt she was only there to bring bad fanservice to the show. Rolling Eyes

And Eriri's tooth, although cute, was rather puzzling to me as well.

Sexualizes its female characters unnecessarily often, several of the girls are really irritating, adheres too much to the very tropes it tries to lampoon

Wow, you really nailed down the three things that kept me from enjoying this show.

Why are so many anime just completely incapable of talking about real world issues or parodying other anime without doing all this stupid crap that completely ruins the message?

"Wanna make an idol show that criticises the creepy side of idol culture? Well you better throw in some creepy fanservice for good measure!"

"So you wanna make a show that's a satirical jab at Japan's weird censorship laws? Why not just use the setup as an excuse to come up with weird fanservice scenarios? Wouldn't that be a cool idea?"

Then again, anime has never really been all that good at biting satire.

nah, it's more the case of japanese being a more open country regarding nudity in general com, pared to the puritan countries, a regular japaneseperson can see a random fanservice scene and make a weird smile because it's unexpected for her but won't feel uncomfortable as it's common in the puritan countries.

Absolutely not. While it is true that Japan is generally less puritan in regards to private consumption of sexual media than the US, the idea that the average Japanese person would be pleasantly surprised if they turned on their TV - just in time to see a guy trip and face-plant into a high school girl's crotch - is pretty far-fetched. There's a reason why these shows are on in the middle of the night.

Yes indeed. As poorly expressed as this is, it hits a truth. Over here in the USA there is a developing melding of one very old stream of American ideas, puritanism, and one much newer one, feminism. It's been fascinating for this old person to watch it develop over the years, to the point where now no review of anything from Japan can possibly fail to mention and condemn their sexy touches aimed at, or in this case satirizing, a well-known tendency of male viewers (at least no review on ANN can!).

I always chuckle when I see this. You are taking in media from another, very different, culture and repeatedly, endlessly insisting that it conform to current American highly puritan norms.

If you want stuff that always conforms to those norms, watch American-made stuff. Oh dear, too boring huh? You are learning. That's where puritanism always ends up. I lived through its last dominant period, in the 1950s, so I know.
