I feel describing the manga as "still going strong" may be overly generous. Mind you, I'm a fan, but the last several years have been marred by lengthy hiatuses and slow releases - it's really been hard to keep up with.
It's nice to have an overview of the available anime versions, though, I think I've only seen a little bit of the first series. |

Lucky for you then, because Berserk manga was just recently announced to be returning to a monthly release format, so you won't have to wait so long anymore.
I myself don't read the manga, but I am so excited about the show. I cannot believe we are finally getting to see the next arc of Gut's story. My hope is that the show does well and gets picked up for a second season. |

I watched all of the original Anime series and never bothered with the movie trilogy. While I wouldn't want the series to be neutered I also think the Manga can get a little "over the top".
I had a friend who loved the Anime read the manga and drop it after what happened with Princess Charlotte toward the end of The Golden Age arc. Mostly I hope Farnese doesn't get her character messed with in the series. Overall I'm cautiously optimistic and plan on reviewing this series. |

Berserk is my absolute favorite franchise ever since I got into Anime in the mid/late 90's. Own all the anime/movies and manga. Own figma's, plushies, and other goods. I am very excited for the new anime. While I would love to see more traditional hand painted cels for the new TV series, it is Summer 2016 and it will be digital and perhaps heavy on CG, we will see next week when it premieres.
It has been frustrating when you only get 9 chapters a year but as long as Miura delivers the story in the same fashion, the art is gorgeous and I haven't found anything close to it and the story is just fantastic and must be read. All and all, I cannot wait for the new TV anime as we haven't gotten one since 1997 and any new animated Berserk is very welcomed. |

There are too many unanswered questions to just continue where the anime series left off because of certain events and characters the anime leaves out, plus one anime-only detail that doesn't make sense if you'd read the manga past the Golden Age. IMO, the main things the anime did well was cutting out strong content for viewers that'd find it unnecessary and offputting, and leaving it at such a cliffhanger that it makes you want to go and read the manga, making it a great advertisement. Other than that, I like the way the manga goes about the story far more; the beginning gives the Golden Age a greater sense of foreboding and lets you know what the deal is with the fantasy/supernatural aspects of the series, as opposed to the anime that cuts out the explanation for them and makes them seem out of place at the cost of making it more of a twist. Also, among the things it cuts out is one aspect of Guts's that makes his relationship with Casca more tender and mutual.
Well, if the episode names for the first 5 eps are any indication, the anime's cutting out plenty of material before Conviction. I know people hate this, but I really think the manga best way to experience Berserk, even after you watch the anime/movies. Several small but important details were lost in the page to screen translation that can really help you understand the characters better. For example, there is a very specific reason Guts freaks out whenever people, especially other men, touch him.
That being said, although I'm not a fan of the CG, I'm still excited to see the new anime. Judging by the released visual, it will probably cover the Conviction arc, but honestly, I just can't wait to see Dragonslayer in all of its glory. |

I have to disagree with the author here concerning Puck. Normally, I would hate his kind of cartoony, comic relief character, but as the series goes on I feel he's actually very necessary. Without Puck, the world of Berserk is unbearably grim, especially in the first few arcs chronologically following the Golden Age. I'd argue that Puck is basically Guts' conscience, and all that keeps him from becoming a monster himself (until he picks up more companions later). Yeah, he can be annoying, i suppose, but I think he's necessary (also without his fairy dust, Guts would have either died from his wounds long ago or become an immobile cripple by now).
For this new anime, I hope they adapt that arc with the "fairies" in a village (i forget the actual name of the arc). I can see why they'd skip it, as it's a bit of a side story, but I think it has a couple of Guts's best moments of the series. Like when spoiler[he's fighting that moth apostle at the end, and it looks like she's stabbed through his head in a profile shot, but then her triumphant face turns to shock as GUTS LOOKS BACK AT HER WITH THAT BLADE HAVING STABBED THROUGH HIS CHEEKS <breathing>] However, I expect it'll jump right into that arc with the wacky group of Inquisitors and their head-banging priest |

I don't think Lost Children's getting adapted within the series (for a number of reasons), I don't think we're even getting much of Blackswordsman to be honest, episode titles for 2 and onwards on WOWOW for the series are for events that happen after Lost Children, plus spoiler[Guts doesn't have his sword tied to his hands from his fight with Rosine, though we get a fight with the possessed tree in the beginning. My guess is, the possessed tree is what'll injure Guts enough to be captured by the Holy See instead of Rosine.....despite the fact he seems pretty healthy and the Knights are a bunch of pastry chefs, and Isidro's appearance'll be moved up here, based on the trailer]. It'd be nice to get a movie about it, but I'm not holding my breath. |

I watched the original berserk anime for the first time last year, around october. I loved every minute of it. I was aware certain things were cut but it left a great impression on me. Gotta love some dark fantasy and the old animation style and the music added to the atmosphere.
Honestly, I want to like the upcoming series, I really, really do... but I don't think I will because of the CG. I can't help it, anime CG has always looked awful to me and I haven't noticed any improvements over the years. I will give it an honest try, at least a few episodes, but I can't say I'm excited for it. Oh and I haven't seen the movies. Might watch them at some point, but I think I'd rather rewatch the TV series. I have started reading the manga too but I'm not far in at all yet. I love the original anime and haven't tried out the movies. I prefer the art from the original more and the way it ended really left a deep impression. I'm not sure I look forward to the new one since it looks like CG stuff and I can't sit through that.

I think I can live with the CG after I've gotten used to it, but what makes me kinda sad that they never used Nobutoshi Canna as Guts after the original anime while he's still alive n' kicking. Canna gives Guts the ferocity and feel that that the new guy lacked in my opinion. But I might be just playing favourites here ^^

I'm also a massive fan of the original series, it's my fave anime. The movies were OK and were better the 2nd time I watched them and filled in the ending that the original didn't get to for whatever reason (I've heard they ran out of money).
As for the new series, I agree with others on here. That CG looks woeful and it's gonna be off putting, the movies didn't constantly use CG and that was bad enough. I'll still watch it though as I'm desperate to know what happens next and I don't really want to read the manga, it'd take more time & money than I have spare right now. |

Which 6 hour film trilogy did Brittany watch? They are 4,8 hour long, which includes 3 credits, on of them partially devoted to twitter names. I will now stop before i get angry...
Go to the new show´s wikia or to https://www.reddit.com/r/Berserk/comments/4nlwcv/berserk_anime_2016_episode_titles_5_first_episodes/ Look @ the confirmed episode names gang. The team appear to be doing the very 1st chapter and the next ep is Vol.18. This is catastrophic as Berserk has a Watchmen like structure. Skipping arcs will invalidate the the whole narrative. 1 min. flashbacks here and there can´t "fix" this! Fancy 3D animation (i for one love the clips themselves, how rare is actual animation on a TV anime?) won´t save the show from being broken at the very core. I thus expect a 6-7/10 music video to go along with the manga and hope for the best. Half a "missing" series + and another "missing" half due to the films (which didn´t even get basic characterization right!) make NO adaptation at all...  .
The abhorred looking new game looks even worse. My positive takeaway is that the manga will get more eyes on it for the next half year. Why did Berserk adaptations peak in 1997? |

I'm relatively new to the Berserk fandom, just recently watched all of the Golden Age Arc films in preparation for this new series (Viz's trilogy release on Blu-Ray was a nice treat).
I had read a little of the manga a few years back and had a hard time finding the original anime so I had kind of given up on finding it and drifted from the series. Thanks to Dark Souls though, and the cross-promotion with Dragon's Dogma, I rediscovered the series and have been trying to devour as much as possible. Dark fantasy is a tough style to do right, too many people miss something important that makes it just click (Ubel Blatt comes across as extremely guilty of not finding that right median), but Berserk has that right mixture. I'm really looking forward to the new series, and appreciate this guide to the animated versions of the series that have already existed. I should really find a way to watch the original anime though, was it ever released in North America at all? |
