From the reviews description, is almost sounds like the problem with the male characters might be that it's hard to parody something that has already long since become a clownish caricature of itself, especially if your trying to do so using exaggeration.

When I first heard of this series, it had my interest. Lucky for me I decided to wait for the review. Honestly, I don't enjoy stories where one of the "threats" that characters use happens to be rape...or stories that also reference rape (be that of someone who is alive of dead). Just one of those triggers for me, I guess.

Thanks for the review, saved me some $.

I am all for making fun of the harrem genre but unlike monster mussume this just comes across as really mean spirted to me based on the review.

I already blind bought this one base don the synopsis. After reading the review I am not sure if I'll get subsequent volumes or not. Guess I'll just have to read it and see. Though considering I just saw Neon Demon in theaters I doubt anything in this book is going to surprise me, even the rape, compared to that movie.

I saw this at Barnes and Noble and didn't know what to make of it.

For one, the harem genre does need more poking fun at. This gets kind of gross though. All the rape references are so unnecessary, it removes the parody for me, especially when sexualized humiliation is such a thing in harem comedies. It would make more sense to flip that on its head.

Also, more of a nitpick at the review itself. . . harems aimed at guys work fairly different than ones aimed at female readers, and while female readers also have plenty of specialized school stuff it isn't nearly as much as guys (especially in terms of ~I'm a super special guy who also happens to be a loser and all of the girls love me for no reason~), so when you mention Ouran and Special A, it almost acts like it's branding this as a parody of reverse harems instead of harems. Which really doesn't make sense. Wouldn't it have made more sense to mention any of the generic or popular cases aimed at guys? Like Irregular or something?

I don't think I'll read the book, but I am curious about how it did in Japan, and if it will gain popularity here for its meta, or be picked up and read as more of the norm just extreme and liked for that.

Nice to see this is starting to get released now. Was surprised when this got licensed since it seemed like it wasn't that well known over on baka. I had a lot of fun with this so ill be looking forward to when the official release gets past how far the fan translation got.

I used those examples not for the harem genre but as "super fancy school" examples instead, or at least that was my intention. I'm sorry for the confused implication - in terms of the kind of harem this is poking fun at, it's definitely more along the Rosario + Vampire lines than Irregular at Magic High School. The schools were just the best examples of the reverse I could think of.

Ahh. I suppose that makes a little more sense, though I feel like there's no lack of those in male harems either. (Ouran is pretty much the standard, but even that doesn't take itself seriously often and is why it works so well, lol.)
