I mean I already knew they didn't mean that yuri but I'm taking the lack of cute girls as a personal attack on what was already a naming decision that brought my guard down unnecessarily Razz

It's the exclamation points where they are, right? It's a name, there shouldn't be any there and maybe just one at the end if you really feel the need one: Yuri on Ice! or Yuris on Ice since there are two of them.

Or Yaoi! on Ice!!. Why the emphasis on the ice? Was there some other show that had similar things but in water? Guys!!! In Water?

I think you're looking too much into this. Yuri is a common name in both Russian and Japanese, and has different context in Japan. I doubt they were trying to decieve anyone.

Why am I not even surprised that most of the conversation here is about people confusing a Russian name with a Japanese term that's borderline memetic at this point. Not that I'd expect the average current gen anime fan to have heard of say Yuri Gagarin but I mean come on, just kind of sad really. Anyway the initial trailer for this made it look like about the only thing worth watching this season. A series about figure skating by someone like Sayo Yamamoto who I know will exert and be allowed to exert some actual creative control over this project and not cave to commercial demands like 95% of late night TV anime now do could prove refreshing. Like the potential for an actual interesting director to be allowed to direct....haven't seen it in a while.

Thank christ it's not a noitaminA either because with all the politics going on with the production committees for that block now (more than most) it can no longer serve it's purpose (I'd say it's currently stands for the exact opposite of it's initial mission statement right now despite Battery being at least passable fare if not what I'm looking for in a sports themed anime) and would drown something with real potential to be an alternative to the current status quo which frankly has more than started to bore me and has driven me to other hobbies to fill my leisure time. I'd call it less anger or disappointment because I'm long past those phases. General indifference and rock bottom to non-existent expectations might describe my feelings towards the vast majority of what is supposed to pass for good late night television now but if this can be different at least I'll be able to say I actually managed to finish something this year.

If they would have localized the name as Yuuri with two u's (it's a long u after all) we wouldn't be having this misunderstanding.

Nope! Laughing This show has a very healthy sense of humor, hopefully not just on Free!'s meta level, but within the show itself. I'm really looking forward to it.

And if anyone wants to do another anime about Yuri girls on ice, I'd be down for that, too! Bring on figure skating anime in the run up to the 2018 winter Olympics in Peongchang, South Korea!

If this gets a broadcast dub, it might make sense to have Johnny Yong Bosch to play this guy, as he has shared a few roles with Fukuyama before.
