I found it interesting how he casually discussed the United States' involvment in Iraq and the fact that it influenced the adaption of an old novel into a new movie. Also of note is that Oshii says that deep down Miyazaki wants to destroy Japan in a movie, completely contrary to the general themes of his movies. Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop

Read Miyazaki's interviews at nausicaa.net He says Oshii says so because Miyazaki, while talking to Oshii (who is a good friend), keeps telling him how Japan will one day destroy itself. He believes pop culture, including anime, has been degenrating since its birth. Which I think is true. The older animes were better than the crap being made since the anime boom. He also explains it in detail, like how its has degenerated to hyper-expressionsm seen in the drawing style since the anime boom to this day. Which I again think makes sense..thats not what true anime is supposed to be like. You wanna see true anime, go watch 1976's 3000 ri by Takahata.

Hyper-expressionism is just fine, thanks. FLCL, par example, is like an animated collaboration between Donald Bartleme and Jean-Luc Godard, and anyone who can't hang with that should get back to the Lawrence Welk studio audience and leave the forward march of postmodern pop culture to do its work. We won't destroy ourselves with smart, kinetic, quick entertainment-we'll destroy ourselves with weapons.

Of course I'm not knocking Miyazaki, who is the best in the biz, but he's got a lot invested in that classical animation style, which is fine if you use it well. But the more hip-hop (if I may) approaches are just as useful. What matters is how a style is deployed, not which style is used.

Don't you think that Miyazaki's style has changed throughout his career though? The things he produces today are quite different from his early work. They don't look like 'classical animation' at all to me, or at least Japanese classical animation anyway.

That is your perception, not the general one, not my and not Miyazaki's. And I don't know why "smart" is such a good thing. Smart can be both good and bad. Technology is what people believe to be smart, yet there are both good and bad sides to it and its implications.

And saying that destruction can only happen with weapons is again not a general undertsanding, but only yours. Destruction and degeneraion can be both physical and mental. The overall evolution (I'd like to call it degeneration) of the anime industry has caused a huge change in the way people think, and its more bad than good. You see, there IS a psychological effect that many animes have, some which stay with people for life. When we are little, and we watch something on TV, no matter how bad or good or hideous it is, when we grow up and look back, it becomes a part of our life, our memories, and turns into nostalgia. I grew up on classical animation, stories which told tales of morals and sent out a good and wholesome message. But now somewhere there probably must be a 7 yr old kid watching Elfen Lied.

There is now a Akihabara in Tokyo for a reason.

Procrustian. Reactionary. If you think we're living in a dark age of anime you must have overlooked Eva, Utena, Azumanga, Kare Kano, Rahxephon, FLCL, Lain, Spirited Away, to name only a few current anime that are smart (and yes, that's a good thing) innovative, and that engage the moral and psychological complexities of life. Yes, there's plenty of bad, pandering, sleazy anime out there. There always has been. If you don't like it, blame Go Nagai, who started it. Oops, sorry, Go Nagai's part of this mythic "golden age" of anime, which was pretty much just like current anime except at an earlier stage of development. It's easy to compare the best of the old with the worst of the new, but no one's denying there was good stuff back in the day. "Old good, new bad" isn't an aesthetic standard; it's where aesthetic standards go to die.

Sleazy, violent, sexual entertainment is as old and as prevalent as entertainment itself. Show me an anime more degraded and nihilistic than Titus Andronicus, the penny dreadfuls, or the Tijuana Bibles. You can't do it. They didn't destroy society, and neither will bad anime. But the naked power-lust that drives so many politicians and terrorists, combined with easy access to weaponry, is a wee bit of a threat to the continued existence of human life.
