But no, not the original Devilman manga, it's not like anyone wants to own THAT in English ;o;

Now this is a surprise. But will we see Go Nagai's originals? Hopefully it could happen but I don't there are those brave enough to read his work. Will he ever allow a print run outside of Japan?

As excited as this makes me, which is very, I still lament the absence of Nagai in print in the west.

I don't know, guys. I think the original Devilman story would be familiar to most fans by now. Go Nagai's name isn't as big as Tezuka's. Regardless of any controversy regarding its theme, with it's archaic artwork style, the original series IMO would be a tough sell.

I think things would change if the different modern reintepretations of the story, like this particular Devilman G, end up selling though.

IIRC, it has the most interesting reimagining of Miki Makimura compared to other Devilman titles.

Well it's some kind of a start. Devilman has always been an obscure thing here and I'll take anything I can get.

Seems rather strange to release this first instead of the original, but I guess I can kind of see why. Only ardent Nagai/Devilman fans will want the old series, but some newcomers might be willing to take a chance on a more modern re-imagining, even if they're not already familiar with Nagai or Devilman. It's sad, but many people immediately judge by artwork to determine if something is worth reading, and the original's art isn't the best.

Still, I would have much preferred a release of the original, even if it were only available digitally. It's hard to determine if an alternate version of the story is worthy of consideration without having the original to compare it to.

Publishing any form of classic manga would be out of Seven Seas' usual area of content, so I'm not expecting anything from them. A while back, I'd have not expected classic Devilman at all, as my understanding was it was complicated to licence, but there was an Italian release in 2013 which combined with this gives a little hope.

It's definitely worth publishing as it's from Nagai's peak as a cartoonist (68-73), and the most familiar property of Dynamic's in US.

Well, there is a frensh version of 'Devilman' that is long out of print, as far as I know.

... While I own that one, I can't actually read any French. 'Devilman G' is a must-buy, but I'd rather get the original, too.

I agree. It seems like a title that Vertical or perhaps Dark Horse would be more likely to pick up. I myself am still waiting on the publication of The Rose of Versailles in the U.S. as well.
