On one hand I agree and on the other hand I disagree, because while you're not necessarily wrong I do find that to be a cynical out look sometimes. We all know making an anime generally takes a good amount of people and money, so I don't mind a series making 12 hopefully really well made episodes as a first season, hopefully they leave it open and stop at a good point so then depending on how the first season does it might get another equally nice looking season. A season of adapted material if done well and ended in a at least satisfying conclusion for a first season is better then no animated material in my opinion, ultimately I mean sure I'll read the manga if we don't get another season and I want more of the story, see the ending the source material author wants, so ya the marketing strategy does sometimes work on me.

I do find it funny however that sometimes one 12 episode season of anime can be for the best, like the manga goes down a road I don't really care for after the season ends, and/or the manga can end in a way that leaves me less satisfied then the anime. There are times that I find 12 episodes is just enough material to be satisfying and not to much depending on the kind of series.

Pretty much only cases where I'm bothered by this format is when it's just insulting, like Gangsta is one of the best examples in my opinion. The anime just ends during an arc and has no satisfying stopping point, or any kind of conclusion to what's going on at the time. Plus the studio went bankrupt right then so you better go read the manga, although yes I know it's probably not impossible for another studio to pick it up. Frankly I rather not watch another season of it after that and I'm not going to read the manga either, call me petty if you want but no thanks, I'm good.
