Good to see modern Simpsons keeping up on the horribly outdated pop culture references.

^ Considering The Simpsons' lead time (usually between 12 to 18 months per episode), having an entire B-plot based around a fad from last summer was quite a quick "turnaround".

^ Probably when one of the main cast members dies, unless Fox decides to recast.

For what it's worth, I thought the episode was pretty good by "current Simpsons standards" (re: nowhere near as good as "classic Simpsons" but also nowhere near as bad as episodes from the early-to-mid-2000s "Saddlesore Galactica" era nadir).

Hey, they're starting to close that gap. One of the last episodes I actually watched was around 2010, about Homer forming a grunge band in the 90s.

I'm shooting at Season 30 being their last. It just feels like the appropriate number. I'll miss it when it's finally over, even if I haven't seen most of the last few seasons.

How long is the time gap between the US airdate and the Japanese one? Do they still air Simpsons in Japan?

They'd likely recast, they've done that with characters in the past and Fox was ready to recast Harry Shearer when he was going to quit a few years ago. It'll be a few more years, as long as Fox is making money off of it, it'll continue to be made.

I assume in Japan they would play "Mezase Pokemon Master" during that scene.

I like how the characters look like they came from a 60s Anime, even older fans are looking at this and thinking "hey get with the times already"

Well, there was that quip at the end of "The Simpsons 168th Episode Spectacular," where Troy McClure talks about how long it could be between then and "when the show becomes unprofitable." The show writers during its golden age knew it.

From what I can recall, The Simpsons was never that big a deal in Japan, mainly because it is so steeped in American culture that it's difficult for them to understand. Hence, the time gap varies a lot but is always by at least one year. To my knowledge, The Simpsons still continues to be watched in Japan, but at this point it's mostly by Americanophiles who would get the various references and understand American culture enough to understand why characters behave the way they do.

References to Japanese pop culture varies its style a lot between episodes. I'm guessing this is due to different character designers being in charge of different references.

All in all though, it's very tough to adapt Simpsons character designs to something Japanese-inspired and still have it be recognizably Simpsons, as the overall art style of the show originates from 80's surrealism, which is about as far from the range of styles common to anime as you can possibly get. Personally, they stuck with the Simpsons style pretty well: The creatures Lisa and Homer go after wouldn't look out of place among The Happy Little Elves, for instance. It's just that they didn't deviate from the Simpsons standard very far.

That's... really weak, even by modern Simpsons standards. They really should just call it a day now...

Pokemon Go sucks anyways and new Simpsons episodes blows anyways too. Haven't watched The Simpsons in years. Full of outdated cultural references trying to be relevant like South Park which they already did with Chinpokomon and not redo the plot again.
