This was such a fun show. The producer himself even noted what a good voice actor Mamiko Noto is. She played Moriko here as well as Sawako in Kimi Ni Todoke, Jiji in Princess Jellyfish and Sayuri in Sakura Quest to name a few.

I thought I recognized her voice, it was Sawako.

It's a good show but there's a few point hat I'm kinda baffle the review doesn't even touch on.

First, despite being in the title, the MMO portion of the show is barely touched on, you could replace the story by them using an online chatroom (with avatar) and wouldn't have to modify anything of the story. The actual gameplay barely feature in the show (maybe a gran total of 2 minutes of the show actually show the people playing the game rather than just talk). Sorta related, there's many event that makes no sense from an mmo point of view. For example at some point someone is just standing around doing nothing, this is pretty common in mmo and is simply the results of someone being AFK (say the doorbell rung, or the dog got loose). Yet in the show everyone immediately realize that it's because the person is lost in deep tough.

Also in the show everyone type rather than use voice chat program (to better keep up the suspense of the gender bend), but this would normally mean that people would have to interpret intent from chat, something that's not always easy. But instead the show has the in game avatar talking to each others and so there's never any case of misinterpretation. The show also makes a very big deal of the character playing as a different gender, making it seems like it some big betrayal or a shameful secret. Yet in my many years of playing mmo I've never actually seen someone make a big deal of someone in game gender, I can't even recall a single case where it was even brought up.

Second big point is that the story is ruled by coincidence, without spoiling anything, even if the entire human population was of only 100 people all living in the same town, the amount of coincidence would be a bit much. For example, at some point someone wish he could talk to someone else while walking down the streets, well the person just show up right in front of him for no reason whatsoever. This also means another big hurdle that people who date in mmo have to deal with is completely ignored, the transition from virtual world to physical world. Normally this is huge deal, you have to face the fact that the person might live far from you, even if that's not a problem you have to actually take the steps to meet in person, a lot of relationship have been shattered because of that. Yet coincidence are so strong and common that none of this matters.

^ The MMO was merely a segue or plot device for the romance so they touched on it as much as they needed to and that's it, nothing wrong with that.

The coincidences are annoying and overused tropes so I can understand your problem with that. It all depends on your tolerance for such things. Personally since they loudly telegraphed that coincidence in the OP and through out the whole 10 episodes it made it easier to swallow for me.

Funny thing is I actually had a situation where someone I was playing in a MMO left my party when I told him/her (I don't know which) I was a guy and my character was female. This only happen once so while it is very rare for someone to make a big deal out of that, that situation showed me it's not impossible. I was so lost on how anyone could be offended or creeped out by that.

Is there any special reason why this show got a full series review, considering it received weekly reviews? I rather see reviews for series that were not picked up for weekly streaming reviews.

Yeah, that's like 90% of the romcom genre, what were you expecting?

I have to disagree, especially how spoiler[an earlier MMO was symbolic of the "childhood friend" plot so bluntly their original avatars were kids.] Can't do that in a chatroom.

You could argue that the show shouldn't have done that at all but I thought it was hilarious.

The show's great fun if a little short. This easily should have been plotted as a full two cour series. A little more hesitance, a little more uncertainty... a lot more development and a real love triangle, thank you very much MMO Junkie.

It's good but it could have been fantastic.

Finished shows most of the time get a review by another critic, so I don't think there's anything special with this case.

The only thing I wish is that it had been longer and used the additional time to show more of the game and develop the other guild members as characters. But still, it was such an enjoyable show! Possibly my favorite of 2017.

I personally wasn't bothered by the use of convenient coincidences, because I felt like that's just the kind of show it was. If you think about it, random convenient coincidences are way more possible than suddenly discovering magic powers or something like that. Sure they're both pretty unlikely (well, the latter is impossible, really) but you accept it and roll with it because that's part of the fun.

True. Other shows with weekly reviews have gotten full reviews, but it is not that common. So, MMO Junkie getting this full review is unusual.

This happens all the time. Especially when there are multiple reviewers who wanted to talk about a show, since only one person can do episode reviews. Full reviews are also quite different to consume than an episode review, so I appreciate them personally. The more reviews the better generally.

In Japan, it's still pretty common to use a text chat feature rather than voice in MMOs. As to why they converted that to the in-game characters speaking seems incredibly obvious to me, and I don't see why that is at all a big deal.

Nick was watching it despite not being assigned to weekly reviews, and since he enjoyed it enough to write about it, we got a full-series review. I think that's really all there is to it.

The entire conceit behind this romance was so far into the realm of unbelievability that it kept taking me out of the experience to think "nah, this is bloody impossible". And it just kept compounding the coincidences. I don't mind convenient plotting when it comes to simple set-up (and it's kind of inherent to this premise) but here it was an exercise in excess here.spoiler[The worst part of course being the idea that Morimori and Sakurai already befriended each other's characters in completely different MMO years ago. It wasn't a particularly important point too since by that reveal the two were already more than set on their unlikely collision course so it didn't really anything either besides strain on author credibility.]

Kind of sucks since I liked the characters just fine on their own. Love the OP/ED too.

I will not discuss the merits of multiple reviews of the same show, but unless my memory is faulty, I don't remember that many full reviews (that were not part of a disc release reivew) of shows that got weekly reviews.
