I could be wrong about this, but the "NewType Flash" sound effect, which is indeed quite distinctive, sounds to me like several stock sound effects layered together in a creative way: a slide whistle (sped up), an alarm bell or a chain clatter, and a faint synth "phaser" sound in the background.

As a hobbyist slide-whistler, learning that such an instrument played a constitutive role in anime's most famous audio sample feels almost ennobling.

I always liked Toei's patented jet-engine sound whenever a character is flying through the air. Or the super-heavy PWEEEEEN! punch sound that shows up everywhere from DBZ to Super Smash Bros. On the non-anime side of things, it always cracks me up when I hear a generic door-opening or machinery-grinding effect in a commercial and think, "Okay I totally heard that in Myst over 20 years ago." Very Happy

I remember watching an episode of Sailor Moon where I heard, no joke, the Dropship sound effect from StarCraft. Probably didn't originate in the most influential RTS game ever made, but it's probably where most people know it from.

EDIT: I remembered wrong, it wasn't Sailor Moon, it was actually Yes! Pretty Cure 5. Episode 47 around 10:11, to be exact.

Yeah, it's weird to hear the same sound effects all over anime. But not as weird as hearing the metal on metal sound effect when a sword is only making contact with air. And this happens A LOT in anime.

Dragon Ball Z had very memorable and distinctive sound effects. For a project for my editing class, I created a fandub of one scene from the show, remixing everything from the ground up, and I had to find a DBZ-specific sound effects library. I wanted it to sound as authentic as possible. It was a huge challenge.

I think the only other show I’ve heard them in is Slayers, and only for a few scenes.

That newtype flash sound really is familiar and sounds quite nostalgic too. I'm quite sure I heard it before in Doraemon and a number of other anime. I mostly associate it with moment-of-realisation scenes.

Edit: It just occurred to me that it was also in Chuuka Ichiban when I rewatched it a while back. It came up in food tasting scenes like mapo tofu. Smile

My university had this foley room fitted while I was there, it cost them ten grand(Pound Sterling). And it was only a tiny room with special walls, different surfaces and this thing mounted on the wall.

Sunrise definitely has a back catalog of sound effects, with some not becoming "iconic" until years after their first uses. For example, anyone who's seen GaoGaiGar likely knows the respective sounds that the G & J Stones have when they're both activated, so imagine my surprise when I watch Raijin-Oh, and both of those sound are used, literally one after another, during the Jaku Satan summoning sequence. So GaoGaiGar made sound effects that were already nearly a decade old (if not older) iconic well after they were first used.

Speaking of the Newtype Flash effect, that's another one that Toei uses all over the place in One Piece whenever there's some sort of dramatic stinger.

On a similar note, I discovered an arcade racing game from the early 1990s which, quite inexplicably, used part of the soundtrack from Dominion Tank Police. A factoid as rarely mentioned as it is trivial.

That and the same computer warning beep is in a lot of the Gundam shows, mainly I hear it in Gundam Wing a lot. Though it was originated from the original show also. Though I find it funny the Newtype Flash is even featured also in Wing despite the show never going there about Newtypes at all so I guess it's a subtle hint at them existing also in Wing? Probably just a reference for fans though. Similarly, Seed also features it despite again not having Newtypes but instead Coordinators.

Also even DBZ apparently used the Newtype flash as well during a fight with Krillin and Vegeta causing one Youtuber to post a video jokingly entitled "Vegeta, the Newtype".

I always thought that Gundam sound was just a Flexatone.

I do a double take when Star Wars sound effects show up. Seen a couple shows that liked to use the tie-fighter blaster for power ups - Claymore springs to mind.

Favourite sound would probably be that old laser/gun effect that sounds like the a-10 Warthog's rotary cannon. Used it all the time in the 80s, but they don't seem to anymore Sad

My favorite is when they just use a human to make extremely lame cat sounds. Laughing
