Does anyone know why Amazon's doing this, and is this a good deal? Because something tells me that just doing a Funimation subscription is better.
But then again, I'm biased. I have a Funi subscription...screw it, ignore me, just is that a good thing or not?

It's a good thing because it will help cater to those who want to watch the Simuldubs but don't have/don't want to get a FUNimationNow subscription. |

Which is who? People who want to waste money? I don't watch dubs but if I did why would I pay Amazon's 2 dollars per episode over Funimation 6 dollar a month fee? I've used both streaming services in the past and they're both at least serviceable. Given the somewhat unreliable release schedule of dubbed episodes I'd wait until all the episodes were released, then I'd spend 6 dollars on a month of Funimation and watch the entire series, plus I'd have the option of watching other shows within that month. If I wanted to pay 24-26 dollars on Amazon for a series I'd just buy the Blu-Ray on a sale. Edit: 2 dollars per episode im Standard Definition, 3 dollars per episode in HD. So a 12 or 13 episode series to digitally watch in what Amazon says is HD would cost you 36-39 dollars. I don't see why I would ever do that and I don't understand why anyone else would either. |

I’ve never done this for a Funi show, but I have bought the occasional Sentai or Aniplex show in the past on iTunes to try out a show and determine if I want to buy it or not. I also bought Princess Resurrection on iTunes during a sale, when the DVD set was out of print and hard to find. I could theoretically do that here, as I have no interest in subscribing to Funimation Now, but I also have no interest in these shows, so that won’t be happening.
There are still some people who prefer to purchase a title digitally rather than subscribing to a monthly service. You save money if you cancel the service immediately, but if you keep it for long periods of time and don’t utilize it much, you really aren’t saving any money. Not to mention, this could also appeal to someone who has an Amazon gift card and is interested in them. Besides, it’s Funimationoffering the titles on Amazon. I’m sure they have their reasons to do so. Funi and Sentai have been selling shows on iTunes and Amazon for several years now. Obviously someone is buying. |

Guys this is nothing new, Amazon has been selling individual episodes at this price for years. The only new about this is that these are broadcast releases. FUNimation does it because they can and have nothing to lose. Some might have a streaming device that uses Amazon and they prefer though Amazon and don't mind spending a few bucks every week. I'll stick with FUNimation streaming service however. |

Oh I knew about that. The problem is, you're getting ripped off when you're buying the broadcast version. They don't automatically replace the videos at all. If they're offering this now it means this is still the version you'll get after Funimation releases the home video version. Maybe half of their digital versions are like that. I remember Amazon streaming and digitally selling the broadcast version of some of Sentai's titles years ago --and people complaining in the reviews about what they paid money for--titles were available for streaming+purchase on Amazon after Sentai's bluray release. But even when it's the proper home video version in HD (at $1 more per ep) that's still a rip-off because you'll get less quality compared to the blurays and be missing the extras for the same price. However, since they don't replace shows like Funimation, or bother to even check with the licensor or publisher, you can be guaranteed that just like the broadcast Sentai digital sales, it'll remain like that until Funimation explicitly sells a different version later on Amazon. I'm pretty sure Amazon doesn't care at all about these digital sales for anime since they're just applying the same model for Prime video which don't have this problem for their live action shows. |

Well I don't really see a problem but seems like a dumb thing to do. Get a Funi sub for 1yr for $60 and you've access to their entire backlog (well except movies).
But I do see why someone would do it. Say you want the legal copy of the episodes but don't want the BD releases. Here's an option to support the series and not deal with the BDs. As for me, well I have all the subs (funi/crunchy/HiDive) and buy the BDs for the shows I like (both of these are on my list to purchase) so Amazon is never going to see a dime from me with this option but to each his/her own. |
