The pilgrimage sites have drawn a large number of people to the point where it is inconveniencing locals.

To be fair many locals themselves consider that anytime a foreign tourist requires an extra 15 seconds to count out correct coinage at the combini love to start coughing loudly, tap their foot or grumble under their breath about the stupid gaijin wasting their time making them wait.

I have lost count of the number of times I hear my neighbors gossiping to myself or my wife about how people from outside the neighborhood are creating problems for them because one something ridiculous or not like, holding up a line to count change, or they get lost in a train station or something so idiotically irrelevant. The term "inconveniencing someone" can literally be applied for doing literally anything.

If you are walking through a neighborhood where you do not live, your mere presence even counts inconveniencing locals. This is one of hr realities I hate most of my country.

Even though I've always dreamed of going to Japan, thinking about actually doing it fills me with slight dread because the social pressure to stay under the radar at all times seems immense. Like, I wouldn't run around Logan Pauling anyway, but I'm an anxious mess.

I was in Numazu for the past month while I was studying abroad. All the Love Live stuff was kind of cool. Most of the tourists looking at the pilgrimage stuff were Japanese and, weren't causing issues. But I heard in the past they had to get rid of the Love Live man hole covers because of Vandalism. I had no issues there as a foreigner.

In all honesty, as long as your not causing a ruckus and respecting the locals, it not that much of an issue. I was in Tokyo last year and actually visited some of the places in P5. Most of the anime locations are in touristy areas, so if you're not waving self-sticks in people's faces it's not a problem. Even the quieter areas, again if you're being respectful it's fine, plus most of these locations the people living around know people will come by. A friend and I were taking some pictures of the swan boats at Inokashira park and a passerby noticed a Morgana key-chain on my friend's bag and asked if we were taking pictures because of P5.
