I like Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka's integration of magical girls into a military structure, as the only ones who can fight off the alien Disas Beasts. Speaking of which, can we count the protagonist of The Saga of Tanya the Evil as a magical girl for the purposes of this list?
Also, it's not clear from the summary of Yuki Yuna Is a Hero whether you've seen the second season (the "Washio Sumi" and "Hero" chapters). They're good; check 'em out if you can. Nah, it'd be too much of a stretch to connect Tanya the Evil to Magical Girls. It doesn't have transformation scenes and the MC isn't, at heart, a young girl even though she is one physically. Glad to see Uta-Kata brought up for this list. It's one that often gets overlooked when talking about magical girl series. |

I'm glad to see Daybreak Illusion brought up. Too many times I see it written off as just a Madoka clone, and I actually liked it quite a bit better than Madoka (I also prefer Yuki Yuna to Madoka).

If dark magical girl stuff is your jam, but you aren’t as much into the Vicarious Suffering aspect of the genre, I recommend checking out Sleepless Domain, a webcomic inspired by these kinds of series but definitely doing its own thing.

It feels like every new magical girl show these days is dark and edgy, like it's a requirement for the genre. Oh well. Yuki Yuna's the best anime on this list, imo.

Yuki Yuna has been out for three and a half years; I hardly think spoiler warnings apply at this point. Also, the second season wasn’t event mentioned in the article, and has its own shocking events. |

Why does it matter how old it is? Most people don't watch, or even hear about, absolutely every anime. The whole point of this article is to suggest shows to watch, which is sort of undermined by giving away plot twists in the descriptions. For Madoka it probably doesn't matter because the main spoilers are talked about so much that it's almost impossible to not know about them, but the Yuki Yuna description spoils almost the entire story, and it's a much more obscure anime. |

Younguns this days. you are telling me a loli that flies thru the sky using magic is not a magical girl because lack of a transformation sequence? The magical girls genre started in 1966 with Sally the witch (yeah, I remember watching an episode on TV), 25 years before sailor moon popularized said stock footage.So having a salary man soul (last time I heard those lacked a gender) is a no no, but having a manly buff male body like in Magical Girl Ore does not disqualifies from the genre? I have heard people say that some females are too old to qualify as magical girls, but lacking a transformation routine or having been an old geezer in your previous life? |
