That would have to be done by the developers... not Crunchyroll...

This is cool news but not the news I wanted.... a Dub announcement would be solid for it! I would watch the crap out of it!

Wish Viz didn't drop Reborn. It's such a great manga.

Pretty sure even the fan subs are 480p. I think there’s a higher quality box set somewhere but... yeah.

So I get that Reborn! started airing in 06, when Anime was still 480p. But you would think by the later seasons they would have started doing them in 1080p. I assume that there is little you can do now to improve the material since it most likely got lost after Artland closed down.

Even in the late 2000s, a lot of anime were hovering around 720p, if even that much. FMA Brotherhood from '09 was made in 540p, for instance. Or for another example, a lot of Blu-Ray ripping groups didn't feel like JC Staff shows were worth releasing in resolutions beyond 720p until Railgun S in 2013. Reborn! did switch to 16:9 in October 2008 with episode 102, around the time other long-runners like Bleach, One Piece, Naruto Shippuuden, and Detective Conan did the same. But a lot of the HD (or at least "> SD") TV anime from that era were more otaku-oriented in nature, like Code Geass, Ergo Proxy, Gurren Lagann, Utawarerumono, and Clannad. Long-running mass-market shounen action series like Reborn! and its contemporary Gintama -- which not only remained SD, but was still made in 4:3 until its 2010 concusion -- didn't fall into that category.

Discotek's 2018 Reborn! releases were SD-BD, and the masters are likely still out there. But they'd have to be digitally upscaled, which means more time and expense for a result that wouldn't necessarily look a whole lot better than the SD versions.

^Also the Japanese BDs were upscales and were horrible ones at that, the Discotek discs were said to be an improvement despite being SD.

Hello! Cool

I think it is great that Reborn! will be able to be seen in more areas. I wish that some group out there would finish the last two manga story arcs as an anime.

I'd be surprised if this didn't build to a final series reveal, presumable produced by Crunchyroll(if they're serious about making series exclusive to their platform they need some shounen), and it'd be a pretty huge get in my opinion. It's very underrated, admittedly due to a weak first arc and a slow later arc, but I guess we'll see if a resurgence happens. Maybe this is just to test that possibility.
Byakuran is easily one of the best villains out there and pretty memeable. Hope his reception by new fans will be as big as I hope .

Agreed. Such a shame it was dropped. I hope they rerelease it in VIZBIG format someday. would 100% support and buy.

Why the Japanese Blu-ray versions looks very horrible, Mr. NJ_?

I own the Japanese DVDs and BD sets.

Whoever encoded the BDs did so with the wrong levels. Lots of details is lost because the picture is darker than it is supposed to be, which makes the very dark scenes of the series very hard to see, especially when the characters have black hair or wearing black in a dark environment. All the episodes were encoded this way. Plus they were encoded in 29.97fps for some strange reason opposed to the DVD's 23.97fps.

Here is some comparisons:
