I doubt it. Single vs plural, and last I checked Moon wasn’t in the MCU. Even if I always joked that if the comics came here in the 80s she would be and probably would have fought Baron Mordo a few times. It happened to ROM. |

I haven’t watched yet, but this is a thoughtful review. Sounds like the movies wound up exactly as most of us expected. I’m glad they’re prettier though!

As far as I know, only Kotono Mitsuishi reprised her role from the 90s anime and the rest of the cast is the same as in Sailor Moon Crystal. |

Well according to the encyclopedia, nobody. Which by the way, also reveals that the dub cast isn't exactly the same as the VIZ one, as Chris Niosi as Helios (thankfully) got replaced by Brian Beacock. Aside from that one change though, it's still practically identical. |

Can we just, you know, accept that Toei´s reboot of Sailor Moon is saccharine and one-dimensional garbage at this point? I´d be more happy to have a an anime adaptation of a manga that is more faithful to its source material, and that has heavier involvement of the original author, if the source material was at least exceptionally good, or innovative, or impressive. The original 90´s anime, even with all its faults, was an exceptional and unique series for its time and at least was better appreciated.
Crystal, however, just goes to show how more cliché Takeuchi´s manga has always been, how most of its characters are one-dimensional or don´t have the complexity required, and how flawed it can be even at its best. SM Crystal has been present in a decade filled to the brim with Magical Girl series that have way better and more complex storytelling and production values, which means that Crystal can´t stand out at all, except for the big flaws present on this reboot. What a shame! |

I always did find it kind of weird that they kept Kotono Mitsuishi as Usagi but recast everybody else. Like, setting aside whether she can still do the voice, it's just a weird cast contrast for a reboot.

I'm watching it tonight in Japanese. Especially after watching the live stream for the music album.
But I think I'm one of the few people who didn't care for the throwback artstyle. I did like how it looked in the 3rd season, but I digress. |

Some of original seiyuu retired a awhile ago. Kotono Mitsuishi is the only one that's somewhat active in voice acting. And some sound a lot older now. There a few that expresses that it was their time "then" and now they've pretty much moved on. |

I've come to appreciate the original SuperS anime more as I've gotten older for Fisheye's redemption arc and the surreal monsters and slice of life humor of it, but I've always wanted to see a faithful adaptation of the Dream arc as it was always one of my favorite arcs of the manga, and it was so wonderful to finally have it adapted. I thought the movies did a solid job of balancing out all the characters and giving the Inners plenty of screen time compared to earlier seasons of Crystal. I loved seeing a lot of my favorite manga scenes that have never been included in adaptations before like the spoiler[Sailor Phobos and Deimos, the Princess gowns, and the Sailor Quartet.] The animation was easily the best Crystal has looked and I thought it was actually a good balance of tapping into 90s anime nostalgia and having a more modernized appeal. It was also great to see the Outers fighting alongside the Inners and I loved we got some more focus on Setsuna's civilian life as she was always shafted badly in the 90s show. I also appreciated Chibiusa actually has her own attack this time instead of just having the power to summon Pegasus like in the original.
My only real criticisms with the movies is I do miss the Trio's redemption arc of the 90s anime which was one of the strongest storylines of the original and the movies often felt like several episodes combined in one than a traditional three act structure. I also wish they had included more of the supporting cast like the Tsukinos, Naru and Umino, and Motoki. I know they're mostly absent in the manga too but they could have taken a few minor liberties to have just a small scene with Naru and co. It just makes Eternal feel weirdly disconnected from the rest of Crystal not having them in it at all. But overall I was mostly satisfied with the Eternal movies and I hope we won't have to wait another five years for the Stars arc as Stars is another fav manga arc and I don't want to wait till I'm in my 40s to see them. |

I enjoyed the second film more than I did the first. The first felt like 5 episodes stuck together, while the second flowed more like a film. I also thought the pacing was better for Part 2. (The first felt rushed off and on)
I liked that the adaptation process seemed to have a little more wiggle room this time around. I loved the post-battle scene they added with Hawk's Eye and how they foreshadowed spoiler[ the twist with the Quartet] in the second film. I also noticed they didn't seem to tone down the nightmare fuel as much as previous seasons did. All in all, I'm mostly satisfied. I'd love for this director/writer/character designer trio to stick around for Stars. Though I do hope Stars gets adapted as a tv series.
The 2012 event that announced Crystal had Toru Furuya there, and he mentioned being excited at the possibility of playing the role again. That lead to most people (myself included) thinking the old cast reprising was a given, especially after fellow event goer Kotono's reprisal was confirmed. Not sure what happened between then and Crystal's premiere in 2014, but it seems Toei(?) changed their mind. We also learned from Rika Fukami's (90s Venus) Twitter that she didn't even know Crystal was a thing until she saw a poster for one of the latter seasons in the subway. That means Toei didn't even bother asking the original cast if they wanted to reprise. It's a shame since a lot of the Soldier's seiyuus are still active in the industry today. Most of them still sound the same too. |

I think most anime studios just aren't that insistent on seiyuu continuity like Western fandom expects from shows. FMAB brought back Ed and Al's seiyuu but most everyone else was replaced. Both Digimon Adventure Tri and the 2020 reboot brought back the original seiyuu for the Digimon but did recasts for the human characters. More recently Fruits Basket did a full recast for the reboot. I think we only got lucky with Shaman King bringing back most of the original seiyuu because the mangaka made it a deal breaker. I think Michie Tomizawa is mostly retired from voice acting. Besides stepping in the role of Mihoshi in Tenchi Muyo after her original seiyuu passed away and returning for Sakura Wars, I think the last anime she was in Magic Kaito in 2015. Emi Shinohara doesn't seem to do much these days either though she did return as Ms. Mizuki in Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card.

Yeah, the review sounds about what I expected. Vastly improved animation and visuals but the actual story still being the main point of contention. The Dream arc in the original manga is an improvement over the three arcs that came before but only a modest one that if you had problems with Naoko Takeuchi´s storytelling skills before, this won't assuage you that much.
Sailor Moon SuperS may have been a lesser work of Kunihiko Ikuhara's but it's full of his trademark thematic density and surrealism. You could argue that it served a important role as something of a dress rehearsal for a fair amount of the topics that would be important in Revolutionary Girl Utena and that his take on Queen Nehelenia was a precursor to Akio Ohtori. Compared to that, the Dream Arc does feel alot more plain and simplistic. At last, the hopes for the Stars arc getting a good adaption are raised up considerably. It's the actually interesting part of the manga where Takeuchi tells a more compelling tale than the original anime for once. Crystal was definitely disappointing for me. It was marketed as being closer to the manga but there were still quite a lot of questionable and unnecessary changes. The animation quality was also really bad, but I'm honestly mixed about the new direction in that front. They started to really ape the 90s designs and animation which I feel greatly diminished the show even more. It ends up lacking its own identity when they just copy the transformations from the 90s anime rather than make their own ones, for example. And even then the 90s ones still look and animate a lot better. |
