Been following this since it blew up last night, and it's just been one gloriously and hilariously bad trainwreck to watch unfold.

I'm not entirely against another streaming service trying to come in and break up the "monopoly" of services we have and try to make anime more cost-effective and easier to reach a wider audience, but this... this isn't it. Way too many red flags have been called out about this to make it seem even remotely legitimate.

Yup, this reeks of a scam just like so many of the projects that have been on Kickstarter throughout the years.

Likewise, when I saw Justin Sevakis' tweets about it a couple of hours ago, I could hardly believe it. After checking out the Kickstarter page, I am still not quite sure what they were expecting to happen. I am not an expert on how much it costs to license a single anime, but licensing thousands of anime will cost WAY more than they will ever get from a mere Kickstarter.

While the general idea is nice to see, this just felt off and shady. If it does turn out to be a scam, hopefully everyone who pledged will be able to get refunded without any problems.

One other thing that the article doesn't mention is that they originally planned to work with Sound Cadence Studios to produce English dubs and even linked to their portfolio..... without even contacting them beforehand. They have since altered it to remove the direct reference, but here is how it read beforehand:

"Our final stretch goal reflects the cost of hiring a studio like Sound Cadence Studios in Texas to record an English dubbing with voice actors. This includes the cost of the voice actors, studios, distribution costs, licensing rights and more! If we can break our top stretch goal, then we will add additional stretch goals for more anime shows to dub and distribute!"

If nothing else, it was highly presumptuous on their part to claim a business partnership with Sound Cadence without even talking to them first.

It sorta sounds like " hiring a studio like Sound Cadence Studios" was their way of hopefully skirting around the fact that they didn't actually have them, they were just hopeful the Kickstarter could be used to get them.

Regardless, never name drop unless you're actually working with the person/organization you're name dropping.

Echoing everyone else’s sentiments that the idea does sound good but the Kickstarter sounds incredibly dodgy

omg they claimed that they will be able to get rights to GHIBLI movies. No way that Kickstarter would be able to buy the rights to Ghibli films.
It took ages for Ghibli movies (exception being Grave of the Fireflies which can be purchased digitally on Prime Video) to be available on streaming services

They’re naive at best, scammers at worst.

Anyone who has been around anime as long as these guys, even in a non-professional capacity, should know better. Unless they've been so isolated in their pirate community that they are suffering from post-fact syndrome and believe that licensors aren't paying millions and millions of dollars in licensing fees.

I think what may actually be going on here is they were hoping to begin operating in a way that made them appear legal so they could start generating greater amounts of revenue through subscriptions. MAYBE that leads to transitioning into an actual legal streaming model as revenues grow. But that is purely speculation on my part as their Kickstarter doesn't really seem to have any intention of raising money for licensing.

So he implies he doesn’t need to contact the American companies but also messaged Shawne Kleckner on LinkedIn.

And you don’t publish the lists of titles you want to license unless you’ve already, you know, licensed them.

This reminds me of early Crunchyroll in its reliance on piracy and of Universal FanCon with the grift aspect. This is obviously a scam for a bunch of different reasons I and the rest of Twitter have already explained. I hope Kickstarter does something about it.

If you want a single free app that has major titles from all the main companies like Funimation, Viz, GKids and Crunchyroll in one place and is a stable app and totally legit, Tubi already exists and is a really great app.

No kidding; the industry is tightly knit enough to where most companies, most journalists, most insiders know each other in some capacity. This wasn't going to fly under the radar for long. Just complete clown shoes

There's also "ludicrously badly informed/clueless"... Which, given their links to piracy in the past, is not out of the question.

Their responses to ANN make them look less like scammers and more "terminally clueless/naive". Either way, yeah, you'd do better dropping your pledge money into a slot machine than you would pledging their Kickstarter.

I don’t know how to feel about the people who actually donated to the campaign? Sympathy? Amusement? Seeing as they donated to what is essentially a scam. There’s no way that they will be able to achieve all that.

I also had a read of their FAQs and couldn’t stop laughing at their response to “why did you block me on social media?” How old is the person who started this? 10, 11?

I feel they are marketing to weebs who think subs on CR use too much English vernacular (when direct translations would inadequately convey meaning) as well as the people who think Funimation erred in dropping Vic Mignogna. These people are vulnerable to just this kind of grift, even if (or perhaps because) they know the only way this site works is gonna be through piracy.

There are social media accounts that actually call for people to pirate stuff CR and Funi put out.
