Small correction for the review; The Ace Hunter's name is Julius, not Julian.

Even though Arden is in Monster Hunter 4, I would argue that this serves more as a prequel to the next entry, Monster Hunter World as Arden is on the same boat and on the same mission that starts at the beginning of the game. I don't think Arden is 'meeting' those other characters but it's more like they are being introduced to the audience. But I haven't played 4 in a very long time so I could be mistaken.

I give the film about 2 Rathalos out of five. It's really good at depicting Monsters, moves and weapons from the games. But the faces are really hard to look at and there's nothing that stands out about the story.

I had a fun time with it. It's not the greatest movie ever, but if you go into it with the mindset that it's like watching an hour-long Freedom Unite cutscene it's a ton of fun to see Monster Hunter doing some character backstory and worldbuilding.

This sort of seemed like a project they kinda came up with on a whim - if the animation was given another round or two in the oven and some of the writing/acting got cleaned up a little, this is honestly a fairly good video game-y movie and introduction to the Monster Hunter world for new players. If I'd have been able to watch this before being dumped into the brutal PSP games alone back in the day, I think I'd have had an even better time getting excited for progressing solo, as most Monster Hunter titles prior to MH4 weren't particularly story-focused.
