Honestly it makes no sense to even consider it a macross entry, just consider it stand alone. The fact that Guld is an alien is almost entirely irrelevant, the war is barely mentioned (especially in the movie version) and the macross is barely more than a fortified skyscrapper. I also don't think any of the later entry ever reference plus (which is strange considering it introduce some massive technological breakthrough).

I can't imagine someone who got into macross in the last few years (ie delta) would find anything to like about this entry (just like I find nothing interesting in delta). And, even compare to other entries, its just so different in tone, visual and story structure.

I wish it really was it's own stand alone piece of work because we might have gotten more OVA/movie/TV show in the same style that way.

I had the chance to check it out in theaters and it was an amazing experience. It was my first time seeing the movie cut of it, and I can see how it looses some of its impact by being tried down but it's still a great film. Now that the floodgates are hoping I hope we get DYRL and The Macross F films on the big screen

Isamu makes a cameo in the second Frontier movie, and the concept of drone technology was likewise brought back for Frontier (after spending years on the shelf for very obvious rogue AI reasons).

Oh, far from it.

Macross 7 - The VF-19 Excalibur mechas that show up in this series are based on the YF-19 that Isamu used in Plus.

Macross Frontier - Ghosts are present through this title. Luca's mecha is backed-up by three Ghosts, albeit those have "limitations" put on their AI so they only act on voice commands from the pilot of the main mecha. Fully automated Ghosts show up in the finale, with the Macross Galaxy deploying an army of those.
In the movie duology, there is a new subplot where Sheryl is accused of being a spy. This leads to the cast mentioning Sharon Apple twice as an example of how "some singers aren't what they seem". For the record, Sheryl's first on-screen concert in the movie also mentions all the previous idols from Macross - Minmay, Sharon Apple, Fire Bomber - to hype Sheryl as the next in the line.
Finally, Isamu himself makes a cameo in the final battle of the movies. When the space cavarly arrives, there is a brief focus on a YF-19 flying to the battlefield while we hear Takumi Yamazaki's voice letting out a familiar "Yahoo!"

Macross Delta - A later episode has a character doing a recap of the Macross franchise, and of course, he remembers the events of Plus.

The ghost on frontier seem more like very limited drone than full Ai. Light spoiler for Plus, spoiler[the Ghost in Plus is shown to be more than a match for Isamu and Guld, being capable of accelerating much faster than human body could tolerate. Plus ends on a very clear note that human pilot are on their way out and human just can't compete. The only issues seems to be that they're vulnerable to hacking, but Sharon also "hack" human, so that's not much of a difference].

Likewise I don't think the YF-21 control system is ever re use, which is pretty big revolution in control and would also have far reaching application in other fields. Also the Yf-21 seems to have crazy specs once the limiter are removed, but model from later entries seems to pale in comparison.

Plus on a big screen….aah…Im so jealous that you got a proper cinematic release in the States. We’ll never get that in Europe. I fear that Big West will only concentrate on Asia and North America with its new chance at releasing Macross overseas.

Well, I guess it's time to bring up the thing that can be either the bane or the joy of mecha fans who want to know how their robots work: side-materials!

So, making the new Ghosts into " limited drones" was a deliberate decision. As JoelBurger pointed out, AI research suffered a massive hit with the Sharon Apple incident. The events of Plus made people lose their faith on the whole "replace human pilots with machines" thing mentioned in the series. So when they started deploying Ghosts again, it was only after creating restrictions for their AIs. Although Macross Galaxy didn't care about this for obvious reasons.

As for the YF-21, the control system you mentioned was judged to be too risky and impratical, so it lost to the YF-19. For the record, just like how the Excaliburs are based on the YF-19, the Sturmvogel from Macross 7 is based on the YF-21, albeit with a regular control system. Going further down the timeline, the Lucifer we see Brera using in Frontier is also part of the same line, and it does uses a brainwave control system like its "grandpa". But in this case, it was being piloted by a cyborg, not a regular human.
As for the limiter scene, I don't see any reason not to believe other planes in the franchise have the same thing. But seeing how, unlike Guld, most pilots we see later don't wanna die, I'd say it makes perfect sense we never saw someone removing the limiter again.

I’m just glad that this came out before the Top Gun sequel since that is supposed to involve drones as well. Macross did it first!

This is just a good, tight story. Self contained, well animated, interesting to watch with hindsight, etc.

So, does anyone want to try to license 7?

when I saw this announced I really wanted to go see it but given how bad the 'vid is in Michigan now I decided against it. Shame to miss it though. Plus will always be a special anime entry to me as my first Macross.

In its initial writing stages, Plus actually wasn’t supposed to be a Macross story, but outside forces (Bandai Visual, I believe, though I could be wrong) pretty much forced Kawamori’s hand to make it a Macross story in order to get it produced.

And Kawamori used it as a bargaining tool, saying they'd only go through with Plus if he also got to go forward with another project. And that's how we got Macross 7.

Macross Plus was the one that got me into Anime. I caught it on Starz way back in 2001 and just absolutely fell in love with it. So much so that as I came into my Internet identity I started using Sharonlover (such as here) to reference Sharon Apple.

To finally have the chance to see this in the theater 20 years later has been the second highest anime pinnacle of my life only slightly below seeing Yako Kanno in concert at Otakon. I think folks are spot on when it comes to some of the series though where this, as a first time watcher, would lead to a bit more disappointment while going back and catching the previous and future series. They just don't have the same feel; however, even without that feel, the foundations of Macross are there with it's three pillars of singer, love, and variable fighters and I think that while the war and such are not mentioned as much or at all, it doesn't move it out of the Macross universe and simple shows us a small portion of how U.N. Spacy developed the VF's which for me is pretty cool.

Overall, I think this review covers things fairly well and accurately. My only complaint was my theater did not do justice with the audio, likely a limitation of the video itself but the center channel was much lower then the side channels which gave a lackluster performance to the music. Again, likely due to the older Dolby. Whatever version they showed us should have been the newest remastered Blu-Ray version, but I don't think it was even that (granted it's expensive as hell).

The music in this anime is truly what made me fall in love with anime. Yoko Kanno did an amazing job with the compositions, the music was sublime and interesting and I could probably rant on for hours, but it's Yoko Kanno and y'all already know that.

I've seen both the OAV and the movie cut. I honestly remember being mostly fine with the movie edit, although having seen the regular Macross as well, I was also one of the people who weren't entirely on board with the more weary, cynical tone of the OAV, even if the animation was fantastic and the music gorgeous. And of all the things the movie had that the OAV didn't, spoiler[Guld's very graphic death] wasn't one I particularly wanted to see. Anime hyper

Oh, man, I'd love to see this on the big screen. Unlike most Macross fans, it seems, I didn't really like Macross Plus very much (owing mostly to the characters) but the animation? The animation is spectacular.
