I don't watch a lot of anime. Maybe 3-4 shows a season. Even if a show is dull or by the numbers, I generally stick with it. Often times this leads me to find some overlooked or hidden gems (Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dia is the most recent example) However...I just couldn't with Platinum End. I read the first few chapters of the manga when it first came out and was hopeful (as you two discuss) for a schlocky-good time. I fell off following it, but once I heard an anime was coming out, I figured I'd watch it to see how it ended. But....I couldn't take it anymore.

This show is unwatchable. The characters are boring or annoying, and they spend WAY too much time sitting in protagonist's love interest's room. I dropped the show once the main character proudly announced he "wasn't going to kill anyone" and the older dying guy asked him basic questions...and he freaked out. Like...basic interrogation of his philosophy made his entire identity collapse. But then he affirmed his convinction regardless, everyone made impressed anime noises and I closed the tab.

Life is too short to follow such drivel. This might be the worst anime I have ever seen. If laughter was cancer, this show would cure itself.

I went into this anime with an innocent point of view. "Oh, a battle royale between gods wanna bes?" It must be good. Crying or Very sad The only thing this anime reminds me of is those misogynistic comments about Ohba

Obata is now working on a new manga series, which you can read on the Shonen Jump app, and I'm glad for him to finally get out of the partnership with Ohba. I loved Death Note as a teen and really liked parts of Bakuman but man was that series ruined for me by the misogyny of Ohba. It kinda relieves me to hear that Ohba seems to have lost the plot in what talents he once possessed.

It kind of seems like the story got off to a bad start because it was trying to take some of the ideas from Death Note, but not wind up making Death Note again to the point where it had nowhere interesting to go. Things like making Metro a creeper seem specifically done because they wanted to avoid Light v.2 and have people rooting for the villain this time.

Death Note had plenty of writing problems too, it's just cat-and-mouse game of L vs Light was so entertaining it carried the series hard, and most of main characters on both sides were at least interesting to watch, like Ryuk, L, Light or FBI wife. Even Misa at least looked good in a way that fit the whole goth/emo edgelord mood Death Note did really well. Remove "L vs Light" from Death Note and it would no longer be such a hit.

I don’t disagree but the problems are really cranked up to 11 here while anything good from previous works is largely absent. If Platinum End was something Ohba had written as a teenager before Death Note, the whole thing would have made far more sense to me.
