My Love Mix-up has really blown me away. It does feel like plenty of the shojo manga I've read through the years, but that somehow makes it even more special. Like, this is a series about the main character falling for his male classmate, and it's serialized in one of the most shojo of Shojo manga magazines, Bessatsu Margaret. I knew nothing about it going in and was bracing for a ton of bad jokes, but when spoiler[ Ida took Aoki's "confession" seriously ] in volume one I knew I was in for a different kind of story.
(Side note, I love that in volume 2 it has a character make the 'you've seen it a million times' "I thought we were going to have a dangerous development!" joke about Ida and Aoki and have Aoki actually get stung by it. It does suck to hear that, actually! You get it, Hinekure! Just...reading through this (and someday maybe Blue Flag, though love triangles are exhausting) really makes me feel so happy about how far representation in mainstream manga has come. It makes me hope that someday LGBTQ rep in mainstream series--be it main couples or side couples--will be given the same treatment as any of the straight couples I've read about. Anyway, the cast is great, Hashimoto is adorable, and the faces are hit or miss, agreed. I did laugh at the payoff for the 'Going to the mountains to think' joke. Ty for the review! |
