I really want to see 5 Centimeters more then anything but if ADV has plans to take it to the movie later this year I'll certainly check it out then. I can't wait to see if Makoto Shinkai was a one hit or if Place promise just wasn't my thing.

Freedom is essencially a commercial for a cup noodle company, so I expect it to be one of those anime that look really nice but is seriously lacking in the story department.

5 cm/sec is what I'm interested in too. Shinkai is such an interesting dirctor.

You're right aluria, AX does get everything!! This year's AX has some awesome stuff!! Curse you, California!

You still didn't mention BV screening Honneamise. It may not be new or recent like the other titles, but it hasn't played in L.A. in a long time.

As groundbreaking as Honneamise is, it is not being shown either 1) for the first time at Anime Expo or 2) on 35mm film. 5 Centimeters per Second, Freedom, and Ping Pong are being shown for the first time at Anime Expo, on 35mm film, or both. That's why those and the other showings are front-page newsworthy.

Now, if Honneamise was being shown in 35mm as it was shown in North America before, that is definitely front-page news. Honneamise gains much from the celluloid expanse. It's also its 20th anniversary this year, so if more was made of that milestone, that would be newsworthy, too.

Ooo, I'll definitely have to go attend 5 Cm/Second! I just know it's going to look mindblowingly beautiful on the big screen. Surprised

Egan: Considering how crappy the Manga dvd was and how expensive the BV dvd is gonna be, it's probably the best chance the casual fan will get of seeing a decent copy at a reasonable price.

I really enjoyed the Ping Pong fansub, so I'll definitely like to see this new release.
