Tried it a bit, as an overwatch clone it's very poor since unit variety is lacking (almost no support or tank) and the level design aren't very interesting. OW excel at creating situation where even random player will naturally group up, evolution has none of that and you just get constant chaos. As it's own game, it doesn't have any hook outside of the fact that it's a gundam game, and even then there's not really any features that make you feel like you're piloting a mech rather than just some guy in a costume.

Almost every unit is a glass canon so you also constantly get one shoot. Barbatos has this really easy combo to pull off where he jump, then smash down stunning anyone underneath him and then can use one attack to kill anyone he hit this way and all you can do is just stand there helpless. Strangely enough none of the range character have a melee attack despite most of them having beam saber canonically, so even if you survive there's not much you do beside run away and hope a teammate is nearby.

Initially I thought the lack of clear roles was a problem, not to mention it's hard to guess on sight how each unit will play.

But, I think that may actually be a strength: Most MS aren't quite so hard locked into serving a specific niche and have some more flexibility. It's kinda nice.

That and its speedy gameplay with the boost system make it interesting. It does owe a hell of a lot to Overwatch, but it feels like it's been ages since we got a Gundam game that doesn't seem like it came from a previous generation - they probably had the right idea.

To paraphrase Ford, any units can fill any niche that he wants, so long as it is damage dealer. There's very little flexibility in how you play units, sure they don't have their role plastered above their head, but there's really only one way to play most of them.

The only units who can claim to be a tank is Sazabi, on account of being the only unit that can survive for more than 5 seconds in a fight. But even then he can't cover other units, his only use is to survive long enough to get close and shoot point blank.

As far as support, only the Methus can heal at will, but that healing is so pathetically weak compared to the damage that it'll rarely make any difference in a fight, its sorta okay to top up other unit after a fire fight in a defensive position so they don't have to grab a pick up, but that doesn't do much. So to justify your existence you need to contribute to the damage significantly.

The pale rider, GM and Dom trooper have some support ability, but they're all on long CD, playing those unit as support would mean standing around and only acting every 10 sec, so most of the time you just play them as damage dealer.

Otherwise every other units is pure damage and can only really be played one way, the only flexibility you have when playing them is whether or not to use the unit to their full potential. Range exia would be useless compared to a Zaku and melee Marasai is just pathetic compared to Barbatos.

Only got to play it a little due to my attention being pulled elsewhere, but it seemed like an ok overwatch clone.

I hate the “Meta is the only way” type thinking that makes up LoL and Overwatch
