These boys, though!
I'm flipping through my Japanese copy as I write this, getting all nostalgic. Mio's introduction to Japanese "gei" culture contrasts nicely against Shun's flashback in the previous volume. Shun went into his onee hookup fueled entirely by self-loathing, but here spoiler[Mio walks right into a gay bar and, still a little bewildered, makes friends with everyone]. I'm glad at least part of that scene was adapted into the movie. And the ears! There are right ways and wrong ways to show off what outrageous clowns we all are, and Seaside Stranger is in on the joke in a way BL usually just isn't, since it's also skewering the popular BL-fueled misconception that all MxM sex is anal. A little bit of self-deprecation can go a long way. I also like that Shun's intimacy issues aren't magically cured in one chapter (it's kind of his main arc at this point in the story). That stuff takes time, and the (eventual) resolution is all the sweeter for it. As for why I continue to assert that the art is fantastic: an incredibly angry puppy(?) with the RBF game of Murr from The Case Study of Vanitas is hanging out in the panel where Mimi-mama answers the phone, completely devoid of any larger context. It may not be conducive to fast reading (or, I concede, certain neurodivergences), but I do pause often just to soak in the art on some panels. |
