The same happens in Australia. People do it for clarity. In Australia, like America, soccer isn't the most popular football code. In fact, it's a distant third behind Australian Rules and Rugby League. As a result, people are usually specific when they mention their favourite code.

Despite the flaws mentioned by review, I still enjoy this show a lot. The manga's author clearly knows his stuff and addresses some of the basics and tactics that most soccer-themed series neglect. Also, while this is no Haikyu!!, Production I.G does a very good job animating the soccer action.

Being raised in Nigeria while watching sports like soccer, rugby, f1, etc. on a South African-owned TV network like SuperSport made me think Rugby Union was the bigger Rugby code in Australia. Is it really true Rugby League is bigger? Moving aside from that, I think the adaptation is decent so far. There aren't a lot of things I dislike, except for the art and character design looking a bit mediocre. I don't get Rebecca's criticism about Ashito being disrespectful with the adult characters, because from my experience with the series I don't see it that way. I see it as him getting the biggest opportunity in his life to launch his professional career and that he cannot mess this up or he'll leave his family in further debt. spoiler[And judging from the recent casting announcements. It seems like the adaptation will end around the time Ashito and three others get promoted to the main team.] |

Oh, I think I must not have phrased that clearly, I'm sorry! I meant that the adults in the show could see him as disrespectful, not that I thought he actually was. I agree with you - he's got no choice but to succeed, and he's committed to making sure that he does. If the adults can't see that, that's on them, not him. |

I consider this one of the standout sports anime this year. There are a number of others but none has sustained my attention so far. The character designs are generic but generally appealing to me. I find Ashito's goofy expressions especially endearing. I think production IG has done a good job animating the show and the second opening is gorgeous.
There are two main coaches in the show now: Fukuda who recruited Ashito and Date who has been placed in charge of Ashito's training so far. Initially I see Date as the 'bad guy' for being reluctant to properly train Ashito, who he views as a burden forced on him by Fukuda. But over the last two episodes, it's been clear that the most problematic adult in the show is Fukuda. The cutthroat competition in playing any sports professionally is already challenging for kids that age. There's no need to make it any worse through the sort of 'tough' coaching that Fukuda is doing to poor Ashito. To not be upfront with his intention until what he deems is the 'right timing' and to deliver the message of 'do it or leave it,' taking into consideration the power dynamics between a coach and a player, completely soured my feelings about Fukuda as a character. Nevertheless, I'm still excited to see how Ashito grows in the future. |

What Countries Call Football Soccer? (There Are 9) More relevant, despite the "FC" in some team names, it's predominantly called soccer in Japan. The weird sameness in hairstyles, especially the sea urchin heads, is something I also noticed. I wonder what's up with that? Anyway, I'm enjoying this. It's Ace of Diamond in every detail but the sport itself, so it'll tide me over until AoD gets its (probably) final season in a year or three. |

I've liked a lot of what this show has done outside of the field, but the actual games have been mostly unexciting. I feel like I could've used a more tactical view of the formations used and plays being done - the show feels very 'zoomed in' on Ashito during play, and I miss the big picture
