My days of being blissfully unaware of how history went down are now over. I'll just have to hope that the story surprises me with a new path, then. Sadamune's introduction helps the story come into its own.

Yay! I’ve been waiting to read a review of the first two volumes. It’s one of my favourite ongoing jump series!
Yes, I’m really curious as to how Matsui’s going to end Tokiyuki’s story. The historical analyses at the end are great and really informative. Nihonga artist Takafumi Asakura did a great job on the kimono on vol. 1’s gorgeous cover. Really happy Viz released the physicals for this series! |

The villains' "transformations" bring to mind Matsui's first Jump manga, Nougami Neuro, where I think it basically remained as a weird bit of magical realism. (It's been a minute.) I think it might also be a visual pun on "oni-gokko" (the Japanese game of "tag"), but in this case "playing demon" is a lot more literal.
My theory from the early chapters is that Tokiyuki is going to become skilled enough at escaping to flee from the intended course of history. We'll have to see. If this goes like AssClass, it's only barely halfway through the intended run (serialization is up to chapter 84), so a lot could happen.
