I'm digging the artstyle. Kinda looks rotoscopy-ish.

More like very heavily shaded 3D, with a bit of motion capture - but yeah, honestly it ain't look bad and actually fits the very "realistic" approach style of Inoue.

The CG might take some getting used to, but I can see there being a divide about the recastings. Although I guess they're probably going for a CG movie reboot vibe with this.

Well, it's been that long. Vocal performance can change with age, so I kinda understand if they decide to just change the cast.

Yes, and also this horrible 3D. I would better read the remaining manga chapters which were not adapted, than watch THIS. Why creator decided to destroy his own work. It is frightening.

Well, I hope that the international dubs can keep their original dub voice cast. Here in Latin America Slam Dunk was pretty popular and most of its voice actors are still active, I can see René García (Vegeta, Cygnus Hyoga) returning as Hanamichi Sakuragi, there will still be quite a few changes due to the fact that other actors have retired and others have passed away.
Speaking about the animation, it's looks fine, I'm not the biggest fan of CGI but this doesn't look half bad. There's plenty of good CGI anime that look great like Promare or Hi Score Girl, but I think with Slam Dunk the issue is thay Inoue's artstyle is so detailed, it's a miracle that the original series looked so great considering Toei, save for some exceptions, isn't well known for its animation quality

The animation looks really good for CGI. More and more animation is going to be exclusively or the majority CGI. It's easier for all involved and better for animators.

The CG is not bad. It doesn't take away from my potential enjoyment of it.

I really wish I lived in an alternate reality that didn't have crybabies like you who kept treating 3D in anime as this hideous disease that will destroy the universe. "Destroy his own work". If 3D animation that actually looks quite nice is enough to make you think it is "destroyed", I find it quite hard to believe you ever actually enjoyed this series prior to this.

That cast change is completely unnecessary and I'm far from a Kimura fan.

I was hoping they'd keep at least Takeshi Kusao as Sakuragi and Hikaru Midorikawa as Rukawa, since they still sound young enough despite their respective ages, but I'm surprised not only with the full recast, but also with the fact that they didn't go with bigger names, Miyake aside. Anyway, although the trailer doesn't clearly show Shohoku's opponent, it does give me hope that it will adapt the manga's final match.

I don't know about who's considered A-listers in Japanese VA industry, but Kimura isn't exactly new guy. As for the others, this should count as their big break. Getting main roles in something as iconic as Slam Dunk is definitely a bragging right.

Since I don't watch Doraemon, I wasn't familiar with Kimura until he voiced Kanba in Penguindrum back in 2011, but as far as I know, he's only played supporting characters ever since. That's why I'm surprised they gave him a part as big as Sakuragi.

Good luck for anyone wanting this in English because if one ever happens (I doubt it myself considering the show was one of Toei USA's infamous flops), I don't see them going back to Toronto for it's dub.
