When I saw the first trailer, I was kind of worried about how the anime would come out. It felt like the team didn't really grasp what the game's overall mood, especially the Jumi arc. So it's sad that it ended up this way.

I couldn't bring myself to trudge through the show, and it felt validating seeing a few JPN fans of the game/series say the same. It feels like the anime tried to give more meaning and purpose to the overall background of the protagonist without understanding why LOM works well without it. But it also feels like they didn't get the flow of the Jumi arc. Honestly, even the merchandise feels so "look at cute girls (being sad, maybe bubbly)!" instead of just appreciating the Jumi as they were. It could have been interesting to add Sappho too, but that felt so pointless with how they ended up not handle the basics of the actual storyline in-game.

I hope when they inevitably get to the Fairy arc, they get it together. The way the anime is now, it feels like they failed to deliver a basic understanding of the game, or how it's enjoyed, but it also doesn't feel like a great way to draw in newcomers.

Just found out this was made by Shield Hero S2's director. And now there is no more surprise.

Having episodic adventures which the hero undertakes for no reason other than "because I feel like it" is actually a pretty accurate recreation of what it's like to play Legend of Mana. Of course, that format probably works better in a game than an anime.

I've been meaning to watch this, but keep putting it off. While the review doesn't fill me with confidence, the part about it being aimless translates to me as it being episodic, which is what the game was, so that doesn't bother me at least.

I really don't get why they completely focused on the Jumi arc, even in the game its not strong enough to carry the full main plotline, which is why it's not. The pacing is also much better since in the game you won't play the Jumi quest back to back, you instead jump from one quest to another, which help fix the repetition issue.

Instead the show should have been location, based, with 1-3 new location per chapter and character doing the various quest there, without any strong focus on the main character.

I agree with this. Especially if they're trying to give Shiloh a larger sense of purpose, slightly introducing the three main storylines and just dabbling around as they wanted would have made more sense from a story perspective, and also represented the game better. Heck, they didn't even need to introduce any of the major storylines. They could have just started with adopting Bud and Lisa, and jump across a couple of the early storylines to introduce the world and end the first season with introducing Elazul and Pearl.

Far as I remember, the meeting with Elazul happens pretty much very, very early in the game, so I'm not really put off with the show starting with that.

It's been a donkey's age since I played the game, though, but I do remember it basically going from story arc to story arc in episodic segments, tied to each land area you unlock. I do kind of agree with the sentiment that maybe it would have been better for the game to keep things as diverse as the game did. When you get only the story arc of one group of people, you basically reach the vastly heavier parts of their stories much faster, which makes it feel a bit less earned. It does seem a bit unlikely that the main character would go to such lengths as.... well, I'd have to watch the rest of the show to fully remember how the Jumi arc ended, but I do remember the game well enough that it had very.... somber and melancholy tones more often than not, usually with bittersweet endings. But it's far more likely that he'd want to merely help someone go look for a missing person, though, even if that would have lead to a fight with the local fauna. Meshing it with other humble beginnings from the other character arcs would have made more sense, yes.

Maybe I should buy the remake and play through it again. I do remember liking the original. I was even surprised that the game's intro theme had made it into the show, except as an ending theme instead (and with Japanese lyrics instead of Swedish ones.)

This is basically where I landed while reviewing it. Maybe this works better as a gaming experience, but as a viewing experience I just couldn't get attached. And I watch a fair amount of episodic shows in my free time, so it's not like I -have- to have a gripping plot to keep my invested. But usually when you don't have a strong overarching plot you have either really striking character motivations, lots of opportunities for interactions between characters, musings on personal beliefs, etc. There... wasn't much of that here, so it felt listless I guess.
