I know this is very unoriginal, but I would have gone with Luci Christian for Aqua (Young). Can't say anything about the rest of the cast as I've only seen that one famous clip.

I’m surprised Juliet Simmons wasn’t cast as Ai. She’s been doing Vocaloid covers for years as JubyPhonic, so she can sing. And she has a cute voice that I thought would fit Ai. But Donna is doing a pretty good job as Ran, so I think this will be fine.

I always thought the fun part about Sentai dubs is how they are more likely to cast less known VAs in main leads. I also think they’re at their best when dubbing anime that are more slice-of-life/down to earth (I highly recommend people watch their dubs of My Love Story, Haikyuu, and Shirobako.) So I’m crossing my fingers that Oshi no Ko’s dub will be a hit.

I am glad to see that Sentai recognized that a big hit like Oshi no Ko should be dubbed as soon as possible. Regarding the English cast, I think it is solid.

Other than Natalie Rial, I recognize literally none of these names, and I'm someone who is relatively informed about dub actors.

Surprised to see this come out so soon (esp for Sentai) given the extra long length of the premiere. Must have been working on it pretty quick.

Sentai dubs are admittedly still very hit or miss for me whenever I manage to check some out - and it really fluctuates depending on which of the three or so directors they have working on a title. Although that being said, Shannon Reed has spearheaded both some of my favorite (i.e. Run With the Wind) and least favorite (i.e. Call of the Night) dubs from the studio in recent years so who knows?

I'll definitely be interested to hear what people say considering how popular the series is + successful it's been for HiDive.

It's interesting, in the early 10s the LA scene changed quite drastically, with a lot of 00s staples going into other fields of voice acting. Dallas also started to change a lot during that time.

Houston seemed mostly unchanged from the ADV days, only loosing and gaining the odd person here and there. Even in the late 10s shows were usually more than half VAs from ADV. or at least joined very early on at Sentai. Looking at this, it's entirely different staff.

Their Urusei Yatsura dub has been shockingly good so far. It has a completely different vibe from a lot of Crunchyroll’s output lately. I see a lot of familiar names from that cast, so I’m hopeful for this one.

I guess you are not that well informed because several of the people on this cast list have been in a bunch of Sentai dubs.

With this dub, I really do think they should have sold the farm and go all in with the casting. Just hire the biggest names Houston can get and really commit to making this the best possible dub. I obviously can't comment on the quality of the dub when it isn't even out yet, but I would have still liked for them to have at least stunt cast for Ai. She fits Luci Christian or Emily Neves like a glove and would have loved to see them or one of Sentai's other big names play the role.

I know of three besides Natalie. I was actually making a fan list of who I predicted would be cast, and I actually got Chaney Moore right; she's best known for playing Dororo in, well, Dororo. The biggest one is probably Christina Kelly, who played Yamato in KanColle, Koko Kaga in Golden Time, and most famously, Mine in Akame ga Kill. And while I don't know too much from Ty Mahany, he's really good as Nozaki in Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun.

I find something vaguely delightful about the VAs for Aqua Ruby and Ai being 'newer' and Kana being the 'veteran.' Cute little bit of life imitating art.

This assumes that I regularly keep up with Sentai dubs lol

There does seem to be a shift that happened in Texas recording. It seems like many of the regulars have either moved into directing, or just plain moved on. I know they are recording at the studios now, but I think that remote recording opened the door for newer actors to get known without having to commit to moving, and directors seemed to take advantage of not having to rely solely on local talent at the time. Moving to where the roles are has to be a lot less daunting if the people doing the casting already know who you are.
