Excellent news! A couple years back I watched all the Godzilla films that were available on Criterion (the "Showa series"), and was wondering if any of the later generations of Godzilla flicks would ever get released again in English. I've never seen the "Heisei series" or "Millennium series" so it'll be nice to start chipping away at those once this channel launches.
This is the first I've ever heard of a "linear streaming channel," but my assumption is you wouldn't be selecting the films like on Netflix, and instead only be able to watch whatever happens to be airing at the moment? Is that just for nostalgia's sake, or something? Hopefully there'll be a schedule. At any rate, going through the list, it looks like every Godzilla film is included except for 1962's King Kong vs Godzilla, and the more modern stuff (Shin Godzilla, the Legendary films from Hollywood, and the Polygon CG anime films everyone hated). Noticed the various Mothra films are also included in this service, which is certainly appreciated. Perhaps over time they can add other classic kaiju flicks, since there are a whole bunch of them. |

As a massive Godzilla fan i welcome anything that lets people see some of the more obscure films.
A personal favourite (in the "What the hell is this?" sense) is All Monsters Attack, which is half crime comedy, half deeply confused bullying story, where the monsters only appear as part of a small child's delusions. |

My wife left for a week just after the channel started up. It's been on my living room screen nearly the entire time she's been gone. Awesome stuff... even if I have all the movies on disc and my media server.

I believe that is correct; Pluto seems to function more like a traditional TV broadcast service, albeit with much more niche-appeal channels. I admit I haven't used it much, but it's a decent idea.
I'm glad to see another fan of AMA. While don't consider it a favorite of my own, it's still a decent quirky movie with a good heart, which has unfairly been treated as one of the franchise's whipping boys for decades. |

They have linear channels, but you can also watch any episodes or movies they have on demand like any other streaming service.
The linear channel aspect brings back the familiarity of channel surfing and running into things on accident, or just having whatever on in the background. But, yeah, you don't have to watch their content that way. Memories of Viz's Neon Alley and how it didn't have on demand until way too late... |

To clarify, Pluto's also a free ad-supported service, one of several that have been gaining ground lately (like Tubi and Freevee, or RetroCrush for a more niche service relevant to our interests). Which is a weird trend to me, as I still remember when Hulu transitioned away from that model because a subscription model was more profitable.

It launched on July 1st, and it does cycle between subs and dubs for some films
Despite that list, a number of these titles haven't aired, and some aren't even available On Demand. The channel has shown the entire Showa series (most of which were already available to stream on most free streaming services), sans Rodan and of course, King Kong vs Godzilla. I'm fairly sure Rodan is On Demand though. All the Millennium era stuff is accounted for as well. The Heisei stuff is where things are looking light. Return of Godzilla, 1985, Biollante, SpaceGodzilla, Destoroyah, Rebirth of Mothra 1, Godzilla 98, and the 98 cartoon have not seen any air time. I think SpaceGodzilla and Destoroyah are On Demand, but the rest aren't. Hopefully that'll change soon. That's my favorite era, and I'm really curious about the Return of Godzilla/Godzilla 1985 listing. Godzilla 1985 isn't just an alternate title of the same film. It's a recut production with some scenes removed and new scenes put in. If they actually got the 1985 cut, that'd be HUGE news, because that hasn't seen a physical release since Anchor Bay's late 90s VHS release, and it doesn't seem to have seen a tv broadcast in just as long. |
