Let me guess MAPPA was either not part of the production committee or they were but didn't make a satisfactory amount of money?

Also, what about the film? Any progress on that?

How about using shameless Jujutsu propaganda and call the sequel "Yuji on Ice"?

Mappa is simply greedy, or to be more accurate Otsuka the CEO is a greedy ass.

Neither Toho, Aniplex, Shueisha, Kodansha and other companies and publishers fund and profit from an anime by themselves despite them clearly being able to do it or even have exclusive rights over it.

The production committee is only a problem if a studio isn't on it, otherwise it's a great system to distribute risk and create more risky anime. Without it we would only have weekly shonen jump anime and weekly shonen magazine anime.

MAPPA was on the production comittee for YOI, but as the very last member. So yes, they would be the company to get the least amount of money directly from the IP overall.

I've read this interview already and while I understand why MAPPA would want to move on to more profitable series that they have more control over like Jujutsu Kaisen, I still find it frustrating that we still have no concrete info on the Ice Adolescence movie. At this point, I'm willing to accept the movie being outright cancelled if they just came out and said it.

But someone made money, right? The IP did make money, it just didn't land in MAPPA's pockets.

If MAPPA is not willing to do it anymore because of the percentage they received for being on the Production Committee, they can renegotiate or the PC can change studio.

I am not hopeless on Ice Adolescence. But I know Japanese corporate bureaucracy can take FOREVER to sort through.

Makes me wonder whether Mugen Train's super-duper-uber-giga-mega-success trickled down to Ufotable and their animators.

Won't be surprised if like 80% of the profit went into Aniplex & Shueisha execs' pocket though.

So you prefer low quality sequel than wait for Mappa? Change studio means change staff also because director is working inhouse at Mappa.

Change studio does not automatically means all staff are changed. Some studio like KyoAni has more in-house people, but MAPPA is notorious for having a lot more fluidity. Director is important, but it is only one person. Anime production is highly collaborative.

As good as MAPPA is and was back when they did YoI, other studios can be good as well. Not to mention YoI is pretty famous for having some highlights as well as some lowlights throughout its run.

I mean, there are way way WAY worse shows out there, like Nanoha StrikerS and Yuru Yuri.
At least this one, had some amazing animation.

Way more than just them. It was amazing when it was running--unlike other anime concerning sports, actual figure skaters themselves adored the series. It was realistic while still being entertaining, with a story many of them could relate to.

Plus, its numbers when it was airing and DVD/BR sales numbers speak to its reach well beyond fujoshi/fudanshi.

I'm appalled at how this IP is being treated now.

I remember being at AnimeFest in Dallas the year that YOI character designer was there. AnimeFest staff originally didn't think that anyone would show up to see guests affiliate with "gay men on ice" (their words, not mine), but were overwhelmed by the amount of (mostly) women there specifically because of YOI. Con was an absolute disaster in terms of guest management to the point that they lined attendees up, made them put their hands on top of their hand, and brought them into panel rooms as if it the attendees were participating in a hostage situation. Staff had to bring in the local cops several times for crowd management, going as so far to threaten attendees by having the cops arrest them for simply standing in line.

I also remember how much that YOI quick sketch sold for at the auction and have often wondered if the buyer had any regrets about dropping as much as she did, considering how the IP has been handled since then.

Honestly, I think the studio has moved on from YOI. Had the pandemic not shut down the industry for as long as it did, I think it would have been a more viable IP. But, a lot of younger fans only want to see new, current properties, meaning that something several years old does not interest them.
