I'm happy this is coming out as I unironically think Macross II is underrated. I still have my ye olde Manga Entertainment DVD. Macross II was my first experience with the Japanese series having grown up with Robotech and I happened to catch an airing of the dub on a network called Movieplex and was blown away at the time and I don't get the hate for it.

Very excited to see this Macross II release come to fruition!

Being able to have AnimEigo working on this is excellent to know, especially as it means more opportunity to see Haruhiko Mikimoto's excellent artwork again. Nice to know the most under-rated entry will get a chance to shine with likely the best quality subtitles, video/audio quality, and extras.

Really wish BigWest/Harmony Gold would let AnimEigo work out a proper Blu ray release for the original Macross & DYRL after this, but I'm guessing those series' entries will still be off-limits for a looong time to come...

You'd have to get Toho involved since they still have the distrubution rights iirc.

Sounds like a great release. I haven't seen it, but I'll probably end up picking up all this Macross content that's finally coming out. AnimEigo does great work so not really worried on that front Smile

Same here, and I'm looking forward to this campaign. The series looks better and better to me as the years go by (part of this, I'll admit, is me not liking the direction the franchise went in afterward). Really good soundtrack, too, and that clean OP will probably get replayed any time I watch this.

Incidentally, a few years back I saw "Roman Holiday" with Audrey Hepburn, and finally understood some of the references in this (and in Gundam Unicorn). Japan must really like that movie.

I agree that Macross II does not deserve the bashing it gets. It's really good. As someone who came to Macross via Robotech, it's an interesting entry in that it has more of a Robotech vibe and story in some ways. I was hoping the soundtrack would be included in this Kickstarter, though.

I'm starting to wonder if Macross Zero has been banned by Harmony Gold or something. No news on it coming over...

Big West has already stated that Macross Zero is free to license out, and was even talked about it during the BW panel itself at Otakon. It's entirely possible that it is already licensed, but the company doing it just asked to not have it revealed until it's actually ready, especially since Zero is pretty much the least anticipated of any of the Macross titles that BW can license out.

Reasons why Macross II: Lovers Again is the franchise pariah:

1. Aside from character designer Haruhiko Mikimoto and two others, no one else involved with the original Macross neither was, nor wanted to be, a part of the production.

2. The plot is a rehash of the original story, when both Macross the series and Do You Remember Love? exist.

3. Most were not fans of Hibiki Kanzaki, a reporter, being the protagonist instead of a pilot.

4. Because of its setting in the relative far Macross future, no characters from the original series, and other canonical minutiae, it is considered a parallel universe side story.

5. It was swiftly overshadowed by the canon OVA darling Macross Plus.

All that said, this movie holds a special place in my fanboy heart and like you I still love it to this day. Macross II is right up there with Ghost in the Shell & Ninja Scroll as an anime gateway movie from the 90's. It's fun on its own, gives you the Macross flavor, and is just a flat out gorgeous and stunning piece of animation. Also, the song for the film, A Hush Like 200 Million Years, still slaps.

I thought although Macross II was merely ok, it's music is severely underrated. I encourage people to check out the soundtrack on Youtube or whatever legal streaming service you have.
