I suppose that Digimon Adventure's English dub was good for its time, but I'm glad I grew up with the Latin American Spanish dub, which was a more faithful translation of the original Japanese, with all of the OST kept intact, references to death and other stuff that wouldn't fly in the U.S., though the characters' names were the same as the English version (perhaps due to Bandai's inistence. Although I did have a contact with Digimon's English version indirectly, because Digimon the Movie was dubbed into Neutral Spanish, and since that movie was made by Saban, the dub team had to use that version as a base and even as I child I could notice the difference with its script and the way the characters spoke with all of the added jokes made them seem totally different from what I was used to. I gotta admit, the Digi-Rap is quite catchy, but it does not compare to the Spanish version of Butter-Fly and I Wish.
Still, the Spanish versions of shows like Pokémon, Sonic X and Yu-Gi-Oh!, were dubbed using the 4Kids versions as a base and I loved them, so maybe I should complain too much. But I'm glad that here in Latin America the standards of what was appropriate to show on TV weren't as strict as in the U.S |

I always heard and saw good things about the Spanish dub compared to the American one. I genuinely can't imagine watching Digimon without Wada Koji and AiM's amazing performances so it's great to hear it kept those songs, in addition to the original BGM. |

Just to be clear, Digimon Adventure's Neutral Spanish dub adapted Butter-Fly and I Wish into Spanish, but they made a pretty good job at it, the insert songs like Brave Heart and Seven were left in Japanese, the same thing happened with 02, Tamers and Frontier. Back in the late 90s and early 2000s it was pretty common to adapt the OP and ED songs into Spanish, many of them have become classics on their own right, some of them have millions of views on YouTube. Something pretty cool about Digimon's LatAm dub is that characters like Tai and Matt were voiced by actual child actors, and they reprised their roles as adults in Last Evolution Kizuna. |

Maintaining the show's Japanese roots was a happy accident, especially later in that first season when the kids ended up in the real world. It's hard to pass off Odaiba as being anywhere else.

Retaining the plot point that the Chosen Children were Japanese was extremely rare at the time and helped immensely in keeping the suspension of disbelief intact, as were keeping their names the same, using the Mark Of The Beast as a major plot point during the Vamdemon arc, and even daring to have Jou mention that the Hikarigaoka/Odaiba attacks might have been terrorist attacks. The dub was extremely cheesy at times, but still was extremely well made for its time. The same goes for the following seasons in terms of keeping cultural and religious references intact, barring Savers and Xros Wars.

I actually disagree with Aresef, because it outright said in the article Toei and other producers worked hard to keep the japanese roots of the show and they worked hard to make this happen. As for Glitter Force, it seems these producers and executives who wanted the show's roots to be respected left and Pretty Cure was left at the mercy of Saban who didn't care at all. I am so glad GF flopped. Now Toei knows a Macekre style dub will never work. |

So it was Jeff Nimoy and Toei’s willpower and determination to keep it Japanese that prevented a Macekre style dub happening to Digimon. |

To be fair, Rita Majkut was a producer on both the Digimon Adventure dub and Glitter Force. It must have been higher ups than her who didn't care about Glitter Force maintaining Japanese roots. |

It sure does. As much charm as the dub has retained over the years, I’m head over heels in love with the Japanese score and the original tone of the show. Maybe if the movies do well enough we'll get a redub. Not holding out, but still.

I think the ship has sailed on that idea - if Digimon were to get a new dub then the best time would have been when Discotek remastered the series. Releasing a new dub now is asking people to buy the series anywhere from a second time to a fourth time and there'd have to be diminishing returns at that point. The dub was even a top seller on Rightstuff for a time, so I think most dub fans are pretty satisfied with the OG dub. That said, if Toei wanted to go back and dub Appmon, the best season since Tamers, that'd be great. |
