Same average runtime three weeks in a row? That's a hell of a coincidence, but the math checks out I guess.

I remember people mentioning how impressive the second-week gain was -- how does this week's 48% drop look, as Netflix series go? Better than usual, worse than usual?

I'm not sure why anyone's bothering to average it; I think this is literally just the full run-time of the show, not an empirical measure of how many hours viewers watched it for (EDIT: to be clear, I didn't carefully check this by adding it up myself or anything, but it is 8 episodes long, and I think most episodes were about 49-60 minutes? 7:34's a pretty plausible exact sum-total...)

Why are people suddenly acting like the One Piece live action was a guaranteed success?

Definitely the most successful live action, it's nice to see it done right.

Because they don't want to admit they never saw it coming, since most people were positively skeptical at best and negatively laughing at it saying it would flop at worst.

Now that it was a massive hit as a live action adaptation, people just want to play it off as "of course it was expected, it's popular". Death Note was arguably more mainstream than One Piece back when the LA came out (took a while to One Piece to get mainstream outside Japan, and got overshadowed for almost 2 decades by both Bleach and Naruto in most places overseas), the reaction for it did not ever ranged towards "popular thing is popular regardless of quality", it was lambasted and quickly forgotten even when the IP was that huge.

Nothing about this was "expected just because it's popular", it's more like "it was unexpectedly a great adaptation for once, and therefore got even bigger due to the source already being popular". You can bet that if it sucked and did poorly with both critics and audiences instead (like Death Note), it would have died out just as quickly regardless of how popular the IP is.

Because they didn't see Cowboy Bebop.

Yeah, for years this was a doomed project. But the second it does well, it’s apparently the most obvious thing ever.

People are funny.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story had somewhat better ratings in weeks 1-3 so the bar so far is below a spin-off to a popular show: https://www.netflix.com/tudum/top10/tv?week=2023-05-07

The Night Agent S1 has noticeably better ratings and was No 1 for 4 weeks:
https://www.netflix.com/tudum/top10/tv?week=2023-04-16

Wednesday was No 1 for 6 (!) weeks with ratings in another dimension:
https://www.netflix.com/tudum/top10/tv?week=2022-11-27

DAHMER also ate OP with a week 2 explosion:
https://www.netflix.com/tudum/top10/tv?week=2022-09-25

OP did better than Cobra Kai and The Crown but both are also far along with the usual attrition setting in. All in all, the show might be the 5th biggest thing Netflix released in a 1 year period. The Five Piece is real! What we now need is TikTok dances and a gay murderer to grow the demos...
A fun tool and The Witcher ain´t getting past S4. How to kill an IP in 2 seasons.

Success in viewership was pretty much guaranteed, success in reception might be what you are thinking of.

All in all, if it surpasses the Spinoff show and enters the top 10 (and chances are it will), the show might be the top 10 biggest opening of any Netflix show released overall (that top10 isn't an yearly thing, it's performance over the first 91 days for every single show).

Then again, one could argue to include the non-english shows top10 as well for a potential top 15 overall, as even then, now it already have more numbers than quite a few entries there right now, at week 3 out of 13 that will be ranked alone (Hours Viewed 361,300,000 / Views: 47,800,000, to be exact).

The One Piece truly is real here, and if those numbers come to grow as seasons go by (it only gets better from here in the manga, anyway), like Stranger Things for example, we might just get further into the top going forward.

It would be kinda funny if it became a Gintama on MAL situation, gotta say lol (in this case not with ratings, but with viewership, aka a bunch of seasons in the top 10).

And all this without the cast legally able to do promotion.

Although I’ve also been told we were likely spared a cringy Saturday Night Live skit about the Straw Hats, so it evens out.

Bridgerton Intimacy Coordinator was a skit on SNL now that I had a look. The strike cost us dearly. Oda is a pervert and keeps us updated on how devil fruits affect genitalia amongst other things in the SBS segments. Get us to Amazon Island/Impel Down Level 5.5 and the SNL bit writes itself.

Well good news is by then Keenan Thompson will likely have taken over the show from the current showrunner (Rumor is he’s been there so long is because he’s being groomed for the showrunner role.)

They’d have a field day with Amazon Lily.

I'm not entirely sure how the Newkama would be handled in the live-action adaption, let alone an SNL skit. That seems like a pretty big elephant in the room they're going to have to address, assuming the show gets to that point. They might get to Bon Clay if they make season 2 about Alabasta and make Drum Kingdom and Little Garden an episode or two each like they've done with previous arcs.
