YEEEEEES, My Happy Marriage is great so far! I like the light novels and the manga, and the anime is absolutely doing it justice so far!...though I kinda hope the anime doesn't cover the events of volume 3, mainly because there's a character in volume 3 that I absolutely HATE, though the book apparently wants the audience to like her even after she pulled all the same shit on Miyo that her stepmother did.

At first, it looks very much like rather than Prince Charming, Miyo ended up with his cousin Prince Surly.

Favourite line from the review lmao

Really excellent adaptation so far! I was pleasantly surprised to see (LN volume 2)spoiler[Hazuki] in the opening. I thought they would just be adapting the first volume

Super happy Evan Call’s composing the music. Will definitely be buying the soundtrack CD for this series!

I really liked the understated way they handled his first look at Miyo before their outing. Maybe it's because such scenes are usually played for comedy, with wild over-reactions, and furious blushing and internal hysterics from the smitten guy, but here it was just a nice moment of appreciation for her transformation.

I was also surprised that they didn't run into evil step-sister while shopping, since they seemed to go out of their way to telegraph that that was about to happen. Since it didn't, I'm not really sure what the point of that scene was.

I hope we'll be getting some back story about the previous engagements and why they all went south. Did the women break it off or did he? Not asking for nor wanting answers from source readers, just expressing my curiosity for now.

I also wondered about this. Perhaps we'll find out next episode that the step-sister did see them at a distance while in town?

Based on episodes 2 and 3, I get the impression that he went max-surly on them, and they didn't handle it well, so he effectively drove them off.

While I don't consider this one a priority view, I have like it more than expected, so it's going to make my seasonal viewing list.

I also got the impression that the fiancées thought that being engaged to him would put them at the center of their society, living in luxury, not in austerity out in the tulies with a surly man who lives like a monk. I think those two things together were a dealbreaker.

But maybe he just found them vapid and shallow and, thus, ran them off? Inquiring minds do want to know!

If Kudo pulled the same stuff he did in episode 2 with Mio's breakfast prep, I can imagine the past Fiancées getting sick of him pretty quickly. Mio's desperate to make this work because she (pretty rightfully) believes that she'd be thrown out and disowned entirely otherwise. Without that threat, I don't imagine most members of high-status families would feel inclined to muscle through his bristly exterior.

SUPER enjoying this show, it is up my exact alley. I've always loved Cinderella type stories that really show how damaging this kind of familial abuse is. The art and location are lovely, I love the setting of Japan on this kind of cusp of technological change (the mix of traditional aspects in the architecture and clothing mixed with the presence of cars and trolleys).

I'm excited to see Miyo's true self come out more as she spends more time in an environment that isn't constantly knocking her down. spoiler[And I also like that in the third episode Miyo's father, the angry guy, and even Miyo herself are so convinced that Kiyoka will abandon her once he realizes that she doesn't have any powers and then it ends with him knowing she doesn't and not even thinking about abandoning her.]

I can see it either way, or both at once, which is why I'd be disappointed if the story leaves that on the table (which I think is unlikely). If they were nice girls with other options, they might've bailed before they got to know him or why he was so paranoid (as the saying goes, is it still paranoia if they are out to get you?). If they're like wicked step-sister, he probably drove them off, unwilling to put up with that sort of over-entitled garbage.

I rather suspect the latter, at least in some cases, with their accounts of his "terrible cruelty" embellished to make themselves the victims of the story.

I sympathise and hope for better for Miyo. But I do not yet like her. Kiyoka on the other hand while showing much thorny sides also has aspects of care and thought that I can appreciate.

One thought I had which might be a spoiler if it turns out to be true is spoiler[whether both Kiyoka and Yurie both being mentioned as acting differently to normal (Yurie has never defended a lady before) might get tied to her bloodlines possible ability to affect the mind. Either as a paranoid accusation to be made, as an attempt to divide the betrothal or as a potential actual story element.]

I could be over reading that though. I just noticed it being said twice that people where acting differently than expected.

It's been a beautiful series both in terms of the story, direction, music, and visuals. I feels so invested in seeing Miyo happy, Kiyoka doing right by her, watching them genuinely fall in love, and hoping the Saimori's end up paying dearly for the way they treated her.

The supernatural aspect also adds an interesting flavor to things even if I'm genuinely just waiting for those supernatural monsters they train to fight to show up.

spoiler[I can totally see Kaya claim Miyo is forcing Kiyoka to lover her just to mess with her.]

I've been waiting for this talkback section ever since I picked this up a a couple weeks ago! Absolutely a surprise, but a welcome one to be sure with how this is now one of my favorites this season. Already appreciating the series even more, and seeing that I should return to basics some more to just keep doing so.

One of the sublte yet not-so-subtle details I was a big fan of, and kind of didn't expect, was how bluntly it showed even Miyo's "happier times" during a childhood flashback, rightly prompting me to think about how this is not happy in the slightest (save for, mercifully, when it was).

Really looking forward to diving into the light novels and following this weekly.

I haven't read the source material, but they were testing her to see if she could see a ghost or whatever. If her family is known for mind control though, that test might not have been the right one. I'm hoping she does have latent powers that emerge later and maybe let her jedi mind trick her way out of a tough spot that the trailer shows her in. All speculation. Loving the art and direction for this series. Keep it coming!

I vote for this explanation. He would have little use for gold-diggers. They probably wouldn't make him breakfast anyway.

Loving the show so far, & while watching Miyo heal & see her & Kiyoka's relationship begin & bloom is what I'm looking forward to the most, I'm also looking forward to seeing Miyo's family experience real consequences.

At about 21.30 in the second episode, Kiyoka states about the prior fiancées that they were "only interested in my money and power". I suspect that is about all we will hear about most of the fiancées. Look at this way. They were girls from rich, likely noble families. They expected a mansion in an upscale Tokyo neighborhood and got a cabin in the woods. They expected a number of servants to cater to their every whim and got a part time little old lady. They expected to desired and courted and got, well, Kiyoka. Most likely they ran off due to missed expectations or were run off by Prince Surly.

@lossthief

I doubt very much that any of the prior fiancées even thought of preparing breakfast. They most likely had never prepared an entire meal in their life.
