I fully understand that the focus will be on Square-Enix's more recent catalog of manga... but when I see "100+ more titles", look down the massive list, & see isekai after isekai after isekai after isekai, and absolutely nothing that would likely be considered an "classic" (i.e. Violinist of Hameln, Dragon Quest: Emblem of Roto, Tokyo Underground, Magical Circle Guru Guru, Haré+Guu, E's, Astro Fighter Sunred, etc.), I can't help but feel let down. At least there's a bunch of non-isekai titles with the various romance manga, for some variety.
I get that isekai continues to be a massive hit with the general anime/manga fandom, but come on & throw some classic/vintage manga a bone at least once in a blue moon. |

They got these for cheap as a bundle package, other titles that are more timeless classic usually have a higher licensing fee cause the better the fandom the better the long term pay so higher fees are required. |

Um, Bookwalker Global is an ebook store, they aren't "licensing" the titles anymore than amazon licenses manga it sells on kindle. They are "listing" the titles for sale on their platform. I mean, that's still a good thing, it means people who use Bookwalker for their digital manga/novels can access this content within the bookwalker store and use their coins, perks, etc, so this is just making these manga more accessible to people. |

I too was sad to not see a classic title. I am guessing an English release will only happen when an English employee of Square Enix champions said release and also must be less than 8 volumes or perform really well digitally. My husband and I giggled as I read aloud “dramatically” all the long isekai titles. Square Enix has already announced 15 - 20 of the titles on the list for print release, but I really feel like this is Square Enix trying to figure out other recent titles to print based on digital sales. This list really highlights the glut of isekai. I wonder how many of the 100 titles are based on light novels vs original content. How many of the titles saw print vs digital format release in Japan. 3700 chapters released!! That’s a minimum of 3 volumes each title. I wonder how many saw their complete release? It makes me curious as to how cheaply manga is created, ie on a Japanese digital platform. Could the mangaka make a living, hire assistants, get married? |
