Saw the movie day before yesterday; visually nice, and the other world felt truly otherworldly, IMO, but...

Haven't seen the Wind Rises, but I can't help but think that Howl's Moving Castle was the last Miyazaki's movie that was magical as well.

Congrats, Miyazaki-sensei. It's his first Globe and hopefully second Animated Oscar.

A lot of first-time winners and nominees this time

It's the first Golden Globes under new ownership and without the voting body Hollywood Foreign Press Association

"First Golden Globes After Embattled Voting Body Disbanded Airs Sunday"

Quote:

  • This year’s ceremony is the first to be governed by its new voting body, seven months after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association —which faced criticism for a 2021 Los Angeles Times investigation that found none of its 87 members were Black— disbanded.

  • The new Globes voting body consists of 300 members from 76 countries, 47% of whom are women and 60% of whom are racially and ethnically diverse [26.3 percent of the group identify as Latinx, 13 percent as Asian, 11 percent Black, and 9 percent Middle Eastern - including 15 from Japan]

  • Comedian [Filipino-American] Jo Koy will host the ceremony for the first time

Haven't seen the film but have heard mixed things; is it that good?

Well, I suppose overall it's definitely a big deal for it to have won as it means now anime films may stand a chance in future (maybe. This probably only won because of the Miyazaki factor). Still, the new ownership and voting body seem promising.

Like The Wind Rises, it's in part a reflection of Miyazaki's own thinking. This movie is best understood if you think of Mahito as Miyazaki, the heron as Toshio Suzuki and Granduncle as Isao Takahata.

Pretty weak competition aside from maybe Suzume (I haven't seen it so I wouldn't know). Spider-Man being a Part 1 doesn't help it. I'll be surprised if The Boy and the Heron doesn't get the Oscar too, honestly.

The film is perfectly good, but its his most arthouse-type film yet, so it definitely won't vibe with everyone.

Meanwhile, at the Creative Emmys ceremony, The Simpsons won Best Animated Program, with their submission for the 2022/2023 season being Treehouse of Horror XXXIII (aka the one with the Death Note parody).

Boy and the Heron is pretty much a gender-swapped verion of Spirited Away.

That's awesome The Boy and the Heron won the Best Animated Film award in an American award ceremony! Though I'd have liked to have seen a little more variety for the other animated films, like nominating Nimona, The Inventor, and/or TMNT Mutant Mayhem. Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken would have been nice to see, but I guess had no chance since it didn't make back it's budget in the box office.

Hoping for the 2024 Best Animated Film Awards, these 2023 films getting a US theatrical release this year are acknowledged: Robot Dreams [NEON], Mars Express [GKIDS], Four Souls Of Coyote [Juno Films], and The Peasants [Sony Pictures Classics].

I liked Suzume a bit more, but I can't complain. An anime winning is already a great news, and I loved the film. Miyazaki's most complex and layered movie, you need to know about Ghibli and its author to fully understand it, and even then there's a lot of symbolism and meaning to decrypt. It's his most mature work along with The Wind Rises (my favorite) and it's very far from his accessible, family friendly films, and that's why it's so divisive as well as probably in my top 3; I greatly appreciate how it's not trying to be popular but is rather an entirely personal reflection by Miyazaki about death, legacy, art, the inevitable decay of the old in the face of the new and whether the dead can still live in their work and others' memories.

Very happy as well as a bit surprised that western movie critics of everyone seem to have understood the film and are giving it the treatment it deserves. I still think about it and find new interpretations and meanings; I'm so glad Miyazaki-sensei came back to make this and reminded that artistic and personal movies have a place in animation. And while movie awards are worth little more than nothing (in the case of the Oscars, less than nothing this year), its acclaim is nonetheless significant, especially given the sorry state of Western animation.
