Oh geez, I didn't think my voice has every gone as high as it just did when I squealed "New Sugar Sugar Rune is out!!!" The ending of Sugar Sugar Rune 6 was such a crazy awful cliffhanger. It was torture waiting till now for the next volume. Anime cry

I don't think I'd say best shoujo ever, I think I'd reserve that for something classic like Sailor Moon, but it's probably second on my list. Anime hyper

Heh. One of my friends loves Vampire Night. Maybe I'll just happen to send the link of this to her Wink

Somewhere in my mind I completely forgot about Hayate.

Is the Sergent Frog collection hardcover like the Fruits basket version? I'm not a big fan of those, binding issues and such.
I can just see the binding tearing.

I enjoyed Zombie Loan the show; I have to wonder if i'd like the manga.

The other side of the mirror looks good. Another book to read while i'm crying over the end of Tramps Like Us.

As for vampire knight, I loved it. Sorry you didn't feel the same way

Hate on Zombie Loan all you want, but I read somewhere that it came out in May '03 whereas Death Note came out in Dec. '03. It can't be copying if it came out first.

I find it funny how much I agree with the review of Vampire Knight yet still enjoy reading...probably because I enjoy the whole sexy vampire deal and haven't read a billion other manga of the same tone.

Is Sugar Rune really better than, say, Princess Tutu?

I'm REALLY surprised to find Vampire Knight in your worst manga sections, since it really isn't bad at all. Most other review sites have given it favourable reviews and I personally like it too, as do most of my friends (Hi KScriv), and a good portion of the ANN forum userbase.

I might pick up that Sgt. Frog collection too.

I'll admit Vampire Knight can get a tad grating, but it's not the worst SB manga. That category is best reserved for Godchild. Cool

I haven't seen the interiors or even much of her black and white work, but Jo Chen's artwork is gorgeous. Can't wait to check this out.

I really have to remember to give Sugar Rune a whirl one of these days. I never seem to remember when I'm actually at the bookstore. Neutral

I've heard so many positive reviews of Vampire Knight (sealed by its recent anime announcement), so it was surprising to read that it stinks. But you're right about anything with "Vampire" in the title getting an automatic deduction. :P

And on the flip side, interesting to see a positive Sugar Sugar Rune review, because the title and cover art have zero appeal to me (it gives off the "generic shoujo trash" vibe). Maybe I'll give it a shot -- the reviews here rarely let me down.

And gasp -- I had no idea any of Jo Chen's manga were being published in English! Buying that one ASAP. Definitely one of my favorite artists ever.

I must get the Good Witch of the West novel once Christmas is over and done with. And I must investigate this Sugar Rune thing.

Depends on what you're comparing it too. The anime of Princess Tutu is great, and very well developed in terms of character and story, but the manga is sadly only two volumes long and doesn't cover nearly as much as the anime. Plus the plot is also quite different and characters have different motivations as well.

I'm glad to see the first Good Witch of the West novel reviewed. I've seen the anime and read the manga, and I enjoyed the series. But I haven't been able to find the novel in a language I could read yet, so this is good news for me. Very Happy I think I will definitely give it a try and see how different it is from the other two deviations.

While I love Vampire Knight, I can definitely see that it isn't for everyone. And I definitely agree it can be a bit hard to keep track of which character is which, but I've seen manga that are much worse in the respect.

I really need to check out Sugar Sugar Run, and The Other Side of the Mirror sounds really interesting too.

I love Vampire Knight, but to each his own. Wink Probably since I haven't read Anne Rice or any other English vampire novels/comics, the genre doesn't seem as tired to me. Compared to the other shoujo vampire-themed manga available in English like Vampire Game, Model (ok, it's manhwa, but yeah), and Millenium Snow (am I missing any?), I think Vampire Knight does the best job with the vampires = eroticism elements. Well, Model had plenty of erotic elements, but not as strong a vibe I think as Vampire Knight does.

I do agree with the review however, that all of the secondary characters look extremely generic and are hard to tell apart! Hopefully the anime character designs will fix this.
