It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it. 1984

Gaming will continue to set record profits year after year but conditions will somehow get worse despite Ubisoft saying that we are moving on to AAAA gaming. I wonder if expectations of infinite growth and a lack of unions are a bad idea and are keeping the AAA industry back. I wonder... Can´t wait for the PS5 Pro remasters of The Last of Us Parts 1 and 2.

Don’t know about lack of Unions not that lack of them isn’t a major problem but expectations of astronomical growth is most definitely an issue.

That Ubisoft is quote is increasingly starting to age poorly with how underwhelming Skull & Bones has underperformed despite a decade of hype and essentially having a template on how to make a open world, exploration & combat driven pirate game.

Will still be out before Beyond Good & Evil 2 and The Sands Of Time Remake

Wonder if there's any chance at all of Sony pivoting away from "games as a service" and extremely big-budget cinematic experience games, if only a little. It seems like Nintendo has a good thing going with their steady stream of polished and fun games in a variety of genres—people generally don't seem to mind they're usually within smaller and less realistic-looking worlds. Just feels like it'd be reasonable for Sony to, say, instead of greenlighting their next four AAA projects, shoot for a dozen AA ones instead? Feel like we've reached the point where general audiences are more likely to be hooked by a small indie game's unique concept, than by the dust particle effects and shoelace textures in a massive open world the size of the Grand Canyon.

Sony PS5 failure spells doom for the company. Its gaming core is basically dead. The PS5 was a poor showing of released games from PS4 the loss of media on the platform and the removal of purchased items from drives! Sony is a failure of a company aimlessly screwing up over and over again. The total lack f exclusives games on the PS5 lifecycle is a joke. Basically it’s a poor investment. Better off with a Steam Deck and not looking back. The PS6 will also be a joke as Sony flops around. Securing no exclusive games and its poor choices of poorly preforming studios. Sony has the digital library loss from merger of Crunchyroll and Funi. This epic fail has deeply scared a poorly managed Sony and should have resulted in a massive class action suit.

If the industry as a whole isn’t moving away from that literally no reason for them to do so.

They do mind that, that experience is on a gaming device that can’t consistently run at minimum 60 fps. Which at least two major releases on the Switch had had problems with.

Most indie games are essentially doing the same stuff that the industry was doing in the 1980’s and 1990’s which isn’t really unique. And much like AAA titles have a considerable amount of half baked, redundant, and not very good elements.

For as much as I’ve seen people insist that gamers don’t care about the amount of detail and realism that goes into video games this of course is not a universal thing. As I’ve seen many gamers remark about how cheap looking games look even ones with reasonable budgets.

The result of Sony abandoning it's roots and chasing the AAA dollar I guess. It would be nice for them to go back to Japan and focus on cool games again.

One isn’t true unless otherwise cited
Two isn’t true citation or no
Three as far as I know only applies to tv shows and movies and has to do with licensing issues.

So let me get this straight you criticized the PS5 for not having exclusives then suggest people invest in a handheld gaming device which runs off a service rife with multiplatform titles and last I checked has two models that are more expensive than either version of the PS5. Whereas it’s least expensive model while cheaper than a PS5 is still more expensive than every version of the Switch?

What does this have to do with their gaming division?

Given how there’s a number of publishers & developers who never left Japan and stuck to doing things in a niche and many of them lost their asses or ceased to exist. Thinking that Sony would never be in that position had they stayed behind is a weird take.

Even funnier Sony’s roots weren’t even in video games they originally started off making and repairing electronic devices. Which they still do.

It's not - and if anything, they most likely pump it on harder because now they have even fewer first-party game development studios that are capable of bringing AA games to fill the niche between major releases like what Nintendo do - while most of their "core" flagships doing the high-budget stuff.

Sony laying off 8% is nearly the same as recent Microsoft 9% layoff

What's Sony's excuse? They're doing it without a merger, while selling 25 million PS5, and people want them to control nearly all of their market

Real reasons? Friggin low profitability with financial forecast for PS5 sales being lower than expected by Sony itself, while margin for software is in pretty bad levels, with both losing of the dominant position in some markets despite they not really supposed to have any real competition (Switch is already a 7 year console and at it's dawn despite it's still kicking - while Microsoft, well, just being Microsoft) and orientation on high-budget titles which need a huge number to sell only to make themselves in green bites them in the back.

At this point they just throwing the people just to have quarterly financial reports look better, and this 900 people is most likely just a part of even more layoffs.

EA also announced big layoffs.

So far industry has employed more people overall from the past few years, so this is an adjustment period. But if it still keeps happening by next year, then there is a major problem.

Sony's stock took significant billions in losses when they slashed half their sales forecasts for next fiscal year, cancelled some GAAS, and are unable to cut the price of hardware, with no 1st party games' established IPs coming to help things. Something that should not be happening mid way through the PS5's cycle.

I think they should also expect a price conscious market and look into extending the PS5's longevity and delay plans for any PS6. Microsoft moving more to 3rd party and signalling a shift towards hardware agnosticism might help. With Switch 2 on the horizon, a hypothetical portable PS4 might also help in Japan that keeps PS4 going which also helps PS5 thanks to BC or an improved PS5 port version.

Though with games like Persona 3 Remake, Unicorn Overlord, and Metaphor Re Fantazio releasing this year, PS4 stays relevant, with Stellar Blade and FF7 Rebirth being a reason to get a PS5. But most likely PS5's price remains an obstacle to further mainstream growth, and people would rather wait to see what 2025 brings, especially with Grand Theft Auto 6, and Death Stranding 2 which more obviously deliver on PS5 graphical expectations.
