|
What confuses me isn't the positions or the recency bias, it's why baldur's gate got two entries? Why wasn't it limited to one per game/series? Is this list really saying BG3 is the only game series with more than one iconic character? I feel it throws into question the methodology of how this was made.

The obvious most iconic Baldur's Gate characters would have to be Minsc (and Boo!) and Jaheira. I mean, come on? The Forgotten Realms setting has spent actual decades coming up with new ways to keep those two (three) around way past the end of BGII. Way to admit nobody on the panel even understood why Baldur's Gate got a new entry after all these years.

I admit this list has a British bias but, on the other hand, I'm happy that the top character on the list isn't one that's exclusive to any one company's consoles the way Mario is a Nintendo exclusive (early Donkey Kong and OG Mario Bros. ports on various pre-NES consoles plus Hotel Mario on the CD-I notwithstanding).
You do have to keep in mind that Nintendo never dominated the console market in Britain the way it did in many other territories during the 8 and 16-bit eras. |

|
BAFTA being british and Nintendos early presence in Britain could be factors to why Lara came 1st, but the poll is stated to be "over 4,000 people from around the world". So again, I question the method used. Probably have been better off just saying Lara is number 1 and not show the rest of this list.

I agree. It's true Nintendo did not dominate the UK market initially like it did elsewhere in the late 80s and early 90s, but the list is still highly odd. Even factoring in a bias for British-focused characters or games. I suppose the narrator for LittleBigPlanet being Stephen Fry helped, but I genuinely forgot Sackboy even existed until seeing this list. |

I notice that 9 of them, almost half the list, are PlayStation IPs or titles that made famous on those systems. Lara Croft might on here because of bias, but it might be because it was one of the biggest IPs of the 5th gen. We should also take into account, that for most of the series existence, it has been made by an American studio.

Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 are about as relevant as Fallout 1 and 2 and Elder Scrolls Arena and Daggerfall are: not at all it would seem. That's not a slight against them but BG is now one of those franchises where no one cares about the earlier games because it got popular with a modern iteration and the older stuff is, well, old. With the new Fallout TV show all the Fallout games are seeing a surge of players again... except 1 and 2, because they're old. I see Baldur's Gate being in the same boat. The modern popularity surge with D&D is due to stuff like Critical Role so the older games and systems are probably too mechanic-heavy and cumbersome for people who just want to hang out with friends and chat/roleplay. Similarly, I doubt that KOTOR remake is going to have anything resembling 3.5 D&D rules and be a lot more simple. And a lot of modern gamers will probably prefer that. |
