That's really disappointing, but also surprising. I love Hikaru no Go, and I've made no secret that I think it is the best work in the "Shounen Formula" genre. So to see it devolve so badly really hurts. I suppose all great works have their little mishaps, but I was kind of not expecting this.

And of course, when the anime adapted this volume, it left out the two interesting stories. Although I didn't Asumi's story as much as Rebecca. The guy she was with was a bit of a creep, which just distracted from the interesting part.

Akira's story especially struck me as pointless. So much space is given to a new character who never re-appears and Akira can't even remember his name two seconds after he's left.

Just wondering, but is this before or after that one insei's trip to China that had a decent number of episodes to tell the side story?

That's just the opinion of the reviewer. I haven't read this volume yet but "D" for story seems to be a bit harsh considering this is one of the best shonen series.

D for story is specifically aimed at this volume, and not the series as a whole. I agree that the story as a whole up until this point has been very strong, but as dtm pointed out, sometimes great works have their little mishaps.
